The previous thread on this subject at Solved: How to stop HP Display Control Service from trying to insta... - HP Support Community - 9587...

has been locked so I am posting this fix in a new one.

If you are not able to use the rollback option to revert to an earlier version of the Application Enabling Service driver, there is another way to stop the repeated attempts to install the Display Service by deleting three files from the driver package. If you are familiar with the procedure to take ownership of system files and add permissions to allow you to delete them and are comfortable doing this the files to remove are:

HPDCPatch.exe
HPDCSetup.exe
HPDCSetup.msi

and these are located in:

"C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\hpcustomcapcomp.inf_amd64_5c8ff28acd75bc32\x64"

Start by creating a restore point then go into Device manager and uninstall the Application Enabling Service component but DO NOT select the option to remove the driver if it is offered. Then find the three files noted above in the given folder and for each in turn use the security tab in the properties dialog to change ownership from SYSTEM to your own admin account, add full control permission for that account and then delete the files.

Finally, restart the computer, the system will reinstall the Application Enabling component and driver but now without those three files, meaning there will be no further attempts to install the Display Control service.

Please do not attempt this fix if you are unsure of the procedure involved in changing ownership and permissions.

UPDATE:

A new version of the Application Enabling component driver has been released via Windows Update with the version number now 1.85.4369.0. The main difference is that the three files I listed in my first post and two others have been removed from the driver package.

I updated to the new version four hours ago and there has been no repeat of the issue with the Display Control service, so it looks like my temporary fix is now the official fix.

It appears that because of your initiative HP has released the new update. I am currently not able to receive the necessary update from microsoft but am anxiously awaiting for the update. Thank you very much for yourm efforts.

Much as I might like to claim the credit, the files in the new version date from mid-March so the update was already in the pipeline and its release now is probably a coincidence, but thanks anyway.

I too was unable to find the update on my first attempt. Then I realised it would probably be invisible unless you know where to look for it or are persistent: it's an Easter Egg hunt! Spoiler alert, scroll down only if you don't enjoy hunting 😉
