I would like to turn on Smart Charging for 2 HP laptops . . . my 17.3” cp0013dx and my wife’s 15.5” dy1004la.

After Googling, I tried both:

  • Using the HP Support Assistant application: but the battery section doesn’t have the "Battery Health Manager" or the "Smart Charging" feature, and
  • By changing the setting in the BIOS: but again, it doesn’t have "Battery Health Manager" nor "Adaptive Battery Optimiser".

Both laptops are 3 years old, and I, therefore, assume that the Smart Charging feature was introduced later.

In which case, if there is no HP fix or workaround, I would be grateful if someone could recommend a good (preferably free) 3rd party app.

Many thanks in advance.

BTW: this is the 3rd time I have tried to type and post this, as each time before I received a failure message and it wiped everything clean . . . most frustrating.

Hi @JohnTCI1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand you want to turn on Smart Charging/Battery Health Manager on your HP 17.3” cp0013dx and 15.5” dy1004la, but the option isn’t available in BIOS or HP Support Assistant. Let’s go through your best possible options.

    a. Why You Can’t See Smart Charging/Battery Health Manager
        • These models are from around 2020–2021 and many HP consumer laptops from that time were not equipped with Battery Health Manager or Smart Charging in BIOS.
        • These features were introduced in newer BIOS/firmware releases and mainly available in HP business series (EliteBook, ProBook, ZBook) and newer Envy/Omen models.

    b. Double-Check BIOS Version & Update (Optional but Recommended)
        • Go to Settings > System > About to confirm your exact model.
        • Open HP Support Assistant or HP website → Download and install the latest BIOS update for your model.
        • Restart and press F10 (BIOS Setup) during boot → Check again under:
          – Advanced > Power Management / Battery Health Manager
          – If still missing, then the model simply does not support Smart Charging.

    c. Built-In Windows Alternative (Battery Preservation Trick)
        • Enable Battery Saver Mode in Windows when not plugged in.
        • Avoid keeping your laptop plugged in at 100% for long hours.
        • Try to keep the charge level between 40%–80% for healthier battery life.

    d. 3rd Party Apps (Safe Options You Can Use)
Since HP doesn’t offer Smart Charging for your model, these apps can help set custom charge limits:
        • Battery Limiter – Free, simple tool that alerts you when your battery reaches a set percentage.
        • Smarter Battery (Trial) – Offers battery wear monitoring and charge control features.
        • Note: HP laptops don’t natively support “charge stop at 80% like Lenovo/VivoBook,” so these apps mainly alert you to disconnect rather than physically stop charging.

    e. Best Manual Practices for Longer Battery Life
        • Don’t let the battery drop to 0% regularly.
        • Unplug the charger occasionally once it reaches 90–100%.
        • Keep the laptop cool (avoid using it on blankets, beds, etc.).
        • Consider removing the battery only if it’s user-removable (most newer HP models are not).

I hope this helps.

Thanks Kuroi,

Re updating the BIOS:

  • The 17” already had its latest BIOS Version, AMI F.32, 06/05/2025,
  • I updated the BIOS in the 15.6” from Version AMI F.35 to AMI F.36, 22/04/25.

Unfortunately, neither has Battery Health Manager nor Smart Charging.

Most disappointed that both HP and Microsoft don’t have either option.

Even more surprising is to discover that no one has developed (or better said, I can’t find) a 3rd Party App or a Workaround to limit the charging.

I had seen the 3rd party Apps you mentioned (and others) but just sounding an alarm is no good for me, as I am quite deaf and not always close to the laptop to see a pop-up.

Anyway, your response to my request was most appreciated.

Hi @JohnTCI1,

Thank you for your kind response and for sharing the detailed update.

I understand your All-in-One PC is not powering on even with a new power cord. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

a. Check Power Source
Ensure the wall outlet is working by plugging in another device (like a lamp or phone charger).
If you’re using a surge protector or extension cord, try connecting the PC directly to the wall outlet.

b. Verify Power Cord & Adapter
Make sure both ends of the power cord are firmly connected to the adapter and the back of the PC.
If your model uses a detachable adapter, check for any damage, unusual heat, or loose connections.

c. Power Button Test
Hold down the power button for 10–15 seconds and then press it once again to try turning it on.

d. Check for Power Indicators
Look for any lights (near the power button, on the adapter, or the back of the PC).
Listen for fan noise or drive activity when pressing the power button.

e. Remove External Devices
Disconnect all USB devices, printers, and accessories. Sometimes a faulty peripheral can prevent startup.

f. Perform a Hard Reset (if supported)
Unplug the power cord from the wall and PC.
Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds to drain residual power.
Reconnect only the power cord and try turning it on again.

g. Check Display
Make sure the brightness isn’t turned down all the way.
If the PC powers on (lights/fan) but the screen stays black, it could be a display issue.

I hope this helps.

Hi Kuroi,

I think that you may have confused your answer to someone else's problem, which they are having with an All-in-One that won't power on, with mine.

Hi @JohnTCI1,

Thank you for pointing that out. It seems that due to a small glitch, another customer’s post got mixed into this thread by mistake. I apologize for the confusion caused.

Let’s get back to your original question regarding Smart Charging on your HP laptops.

Unfortunately, not all HP models (especially those released around 2020–2021) support Smart Charging or Battery Health Manager features. These features were gradually introduced on select newer HP laptops with firmware and BIOS support for adaptive charging logic.

However, here are a few things you can still try:

Double-Check for Hidden Battery Settings

Restart your laptop and tap Esc → F10 to enter the BIOS.

Look under Advanced > Power Management or Battery Settings.

If available, look for Battery Health Manager, Smart Charging, or Adaptive Battery Optimizer, and enable the option “Maximize battery health”.
(If you don’t see these options, your BIOS likely doesn’t support Smart Charging.)

Ensure HP Software is Up to Date

Open HP Support AssistantMy DashboardUpdates.

Install any available BIOS, System Firmware, or Power Management updates.

Reboot after installation and re-check the battery section under HP Support Assistant → Device SupportBattery.

Third-Party Battery Charge Limit Tools

If Smart Charging isn’t available natively, you can use a third-party utility to set a custom battery charge threshold:

Battery Limiter – Simple tool to alert/limit charging to a certain percentage.

Smarter Battery or BatteryCare – Offers advanced health tracking and notifications.
(Note: These apps can’t physically stop charging on all systems, but they help maintain charge discipline.)

Practical Tips to Extend Battery Life

Even without Smart Charging, you can protect your battery by:

Keeping charge between 40%–80% during long plugged-in sessions.

Avoiding constant high temperatures (e.g., gaming while charging).

Performing a full charge/discharge cycle once a month.

I hope this helps.

Hi Kuroi,

I had already tried these suggestions, see my reply of the 26th following your first answer on the 26th.

You then confused my posting with someone else's problem and then, on the 29th, repeated your suggestions of the 26th, to which I had already replied.

Unfortunately, as I said, I was most disappointed that neither HP (Support Assistant and the latest BIOS) nor Microsoft have Battery Health Manager nor a Smart Charging option.

BTW: I tried replying to your new message, which wasn't in the original thread, but received this pop-up:

This is not the first time that I have had problems trying to use this HP support site, for this particular problem. e.g. my very first attempt at posting was rejected and wiped clean 2 times before it finally accepted my 3rd attempt.

To be absolutely honest, it is not user friendly at all, including that (i) it is difficult to follow a thread, (ii) even you confused me with another's posting and now (iii) you have started a new thread, which is it not linked to this original .

Wow . . . now I can't even get to see your earlier message of this morning.

When I click on the link in the e-mail that I received from the HP Support Community this is what appears:

JohnTCI1_0-1762193559298.png

It probably won't be a surprise that the link "Return to my original page" also doen't work.

In other words: You have some serious problems of your own to resolve, before trying to resolve ours.
