I bought a new HP 17-cp1035cl from Costco. Never even booted it with the horrid Win11, I installed Zorin Core OS (Linux).
No problems there, the install went through with few glitches and the machine is running well.
There is, however, a UEFI/BIOS update available that I want to get done. I downloaded the sp143332.exe... a WINDOWS file... why are your files for the UEFI/BIOS OS-specific?
No problem, I'll just fire up my wife's Win11 laptop and burn it to a USB stick from there. Oh, wait... all the security features on Win11 SHUT THE PROGRAM DOWN!
Ok, ok... I'll get Ventoy, download the Win10PE .ISO file and boot from a USB stick into Win10PE, then connect to WiFi, download the sp143332.exe file, run it and burn to another USB stick. No problem.
Oh, wait... when I plugged the USB stick with the UEFI/BIOS update back into the HP 17-cp1035cl, booted, hit F9 and selected "Boot from EFI", it popped up a message that the boot .EFI file had an invalid signature and I should check my SecureBoot settings! SecureBoot is enabled, with the factory default key.
Ok, no problem... I'll put on my headdress, defrost the chicken, shake the chicken over the computer while chanting in monosyllabic monotone... because that's about all I'm left with.
How, oh, how, oh how does HP get something so simple so very, very wrong? I mean, yeah, HP has the reputation for creating fantastic hardware and horrendous software, but geez, you guys are pushing the envelope here!
Whomever came up with the idea that UEFI/BIOS updates should be in a Windows-specific file format, whoever programmed the Kafkaesque torture device known as sp143332.exe... they should all be FIRED.
Do let me know exactly the steps to take to get around your broken processes and even-more-broken software, HP.
