I recently uploaded some pictures onto my hp notebook.  It has 500 gb hardrive and 4gb system memory.  I uploaded aroung 22 gb of photos onto the computer, now my photo app will not open. the only way to see the pictures is through the documents tab but i still can not click on them to make them bigger. When i try it says photos app will not start. Can someone please help me fix this problem? Thanks.

Hello cc1216

Before we can help, w need a lot more details on what you have going on.

What is the full model number of your computer?

What is the version of Windows?

What kind of photo files are you uploading:  jpeg, tiff, camera raw?

Which "Photo App"  or program are you using?

For the model #do you mean the product number
Windows 10
Jpeg i believe. I transfred them from my phone.
Photo app/program is the pre-installed Microsoft associated app that will not open
I uploaded the photos using file explorer tab

Thanks.

Yes the Product Number will work also.

Will the Win 10 Photo Viewer App open on it own before clicking on photos?

To find out, type photo viewer in the Windows Search Bar (Cortana).

In the list that pops up, best match should say Photos -Trusted Windows Store App.

Click on that.

If it opens, good. Now close it.

Open the folder the photos are in and right click on a photo, choose Open with... and arrow over to the Photos app and select it.

Does it still open?

If yes, make sure the Windows Photo App is set as the default viewer.

How to set default programs.

If not or the Photo Viewer App wont open manually, something has went south and we will have to start by running the Windows Trouble Shooter.

If the laptop is new, make sure Windows is fully updated first.

There is also the old legacy photo viewer (the one used in Windows 7)  that we can enable. I like it better anyway.

One other possibility...

there is also a small chance the files (during transfer) became corrupted and wont open, even though you can see the thumbnails.

To test, transfer only one photo over from the phone to your desktop, then open it to see if it works. If it does, then reload the other photos from the phone again but not all at once.

I will wait to hear back from you before going any further.

OK Thanks.

This makes me wonder if you have other Apps that are not working also.

Looking into this further, it looks like several others that have this issue, say the Windows Troubleshooter isn't solving the problem.

Two things you can try...

1. The photo app should be there, its just corrupted for what ever reason.

The fix (according to Microsoft) is to uninstall the app, then reinstall it. Even though it doesnt start or show up, it should still be there.

Here is a tutorial from another website listing the steps to do this.

How To Reinstall The Photos App In Windows 10

2. There are some things the photo app wont do that the older version of Photo Viewer can. If the first fix does not work, you can use the older version as an alternative.

Example:

undefined

To re-enable the old viewer, you will need this tool... Ultimate Windows Tweaker.

Here is the info page from the the maker... The Windows Club.

It's a tech tool that I use to tweak things on the fly.

Save it to your computer and open the folder.

Click on the .exe file to start it up. It does not install anything, it is a stand alone program.

Go to the Additional tab on the left side.

Click on Enable Windows Photo Viewer.

Click Apply Tweaks and exit.

undefined

Let me know if any of this helps or you have further problems.

I actually tried to open other pre installed apps and they did not open. Do you have any suggestions to fix all these other apps.
HP Recommended

OK, guess I should have asked that to begin with.

I have no way of knowing what your specific cause is.

I can suggest a couple of things.

You can spend a lot of time troubleshooting if you want. You might find it easily, you might not.

There are a list of things to go through on this website...

Windows 10 Apps Won’t Open: Full Guide to Fix

There is the Windows Troubleshooter download you can try...

Run the troubleshooter for Windows apps

Or you can just skip all that and re-install Windows back to factory settings and start over with a clean slate.

This will wipe all the data. Be sure to back up any docs, photos, etc you dont want to lose onto a different drive or the cloud.

IF your laptop is new, Ill post the link on how to reset Windows 10 back to factory below.

Here are the steps to reset Windows back to factory if the troubleshooting methods aren't going to work for you.

HP PCs - Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 10)

IF running the recovery from the HP Support Manager does not work, nor does running it from F11 at startup as posted in the instructions above, the recovery partition has failed in some way.

IF this occurs for you, you will need to order the recovery media from HP Support to do the reinstall with.

Let me know what your product number is so I can give you the direct link.
