The hard drive light is solid because when the PC goes to sleep, it stores information related to its state.  Then when you wake it up, it has to read that information to restore the PC -- and to do that, it has to read the drive.  As long as you use Sleep, there is no way around this.

One alternative is to NOT use sleep or hibernation, but the downside then is that laptop has to boot from scratch every time -- and that can take longer, is some cases much longer, than awaking from sleep.

Once it goes into sleep mode the screen dosent turn on I sat there for 20 minutes waiting to see nothing but a solid hard drive light like it was turned on but no display and the hard drive light solid, so it only works when I restart it is there a setting in windows 7 or in the bios?

Thank you.

There are no settings in the bios that would affect this,  and while Windows DOES have some settings, they determine when the screen turns OFF -- not ON.  When the PC resumes from sleep or hibernation, the screen should turn on within a few seconds at most.  From what you're saying, it stays until you do a cold restart of the PC.

You best bet then, since putting the laptop to sleep is only making MORE work for you, would be to go into the power settings and disable that -- so that when you turn the PC off, it is completely off.  It will then take longer to restart, but you should not continue to have the black screen issues.
