Hi all, I'm trying to run a system recovery on my HP [insert model] and the Recovery Manager gets stuck at the "preparing files" or 0% stage and doesn't progress even after waiting a long time. A few details:

  • What triggered it: (e.g., "tried to reset after a failed update" / "drive started acting up")
  • Have you tried: unplugging peripherals, using a recovery USB instead of the built-in partition, checking if the recovery partition itself might be corrupted
  • Any error codes shown, if any

Has anyone dealt with this specific issue? Did a clean recovery USB drive from HP's site fix it, or did you end up needing to contact support directly

Make sure the OS is not corrupted

SFC and DISM are both tools that scan and repair corrupted system files. However, SFC uses a cached version of the files, while DISM uses the internet to download and fix the files.

Try the SFC first and if it gives a message that it cannot fix the problem then try the DISM tool.

Before doing any of the above please ensure you can pass memory and disk diagnostics.

UEFI warranty test: Check to see if there is a hardware problem: Watch this video.

Tap the ESC key after powering on. Tap it once a second after you see the LEDs on the keyboard flash. When you see the startup menu, press F2 to run diagnostics.

If a component fails during the UEFI test then Click here to check warranty

Are you trying to do a restore point

This video describes how to use a restore point.

see if you have cloud recovery
Go to the below site and enter your product ID including the 3 characters after the # character
If you have cloud recovery you can restore your system using a 64gb flash.
It may take an hour or more to create the recovery USB.
