I have a HP ENVY x360 15.6 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 15m-es0000 (268U2AV), that has been inactive for a while. When I tried to open the computer settings the window pops up and close it. How can I fix this?

Hi @mnakamura,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble opening the Settings window on your HP ENVY x360 laptop. There could be various reasons why this issue is occurring. Let's try some troubleshooting steps to help resolve the problem.

  • Restart your laptop: Sometimes, a simple restart can fix temporary glitches. Turn off your laptop, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
  • Check for Windows updates: Ensure that your laptop is up-to-date with the latest Windows updates. These updates often include bug fixes that can resolve such issues. To check for updates, go to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Windows Update" and click on "Check for updates."
  • Run Windows Troubleshooter: Windows has built-in troubleshooters that can automatically detect and fix common issues. To access them, go to "Settings" > "Update & Security" > "Troubleshoot." Then, select "Additional troubleshooters" and run the "Windows Update" troubleshooter.
  • Scan for malware: Malware can cause various problems on your system, including issues with Settings. Run a full system scan using your installed antivirus software to check for any potential threats.
  • Check for driver updates: Outdated or corrupt drivers can sometimes cause conflicts with the operating system. Visit the HP website or use the HP Support Assistant (if pre-installed) to check for any driver updates for your laptop.
  • Perform a System File Checker (SFC) scan: SFC is a built-in Windows tool that scans and repairs corrupted system files. Open the Command Prompt as an administrator (search for "cmd" in the Start menu, right-click on "Command Prompt," and select "Run as administrator"). Then, type the command "sfc /scannow" and press Enter. Wait for the scan to complete and follow any on-screen instructions.
  • Check for third-party software conflicts: Sometimes, third-party software can interfere with system processes, causing issues like this. Try disabling any recently installed software and see if the problem persists.
  • Create a new user account: If the issue is user-specific, creating a new user account can help determine if the problem is with the current user profile. To do this, go to "Settings" > "Accounts" > "Family & other users" > "Add someone else to this PC."

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
