HP 15 -ba053nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I can't save changes to the Bios namely enabled the Legacy mode and disabled the Secure boot.  This is a followup to my previous solved issue of "Need main W7 drivers for HP... preloaded with W10 and not supported on HP downloads".

I gathered all the drivers I needed and had them on a USB drive ready to load once the Windows 7 was loaded. As instructed, I first went into the Bios to set the CD/DVD drive as the boot source and I enabled the Legacy mode and disabled the Secure boot.  I exited saving all changes which was a double confirmation exit. Then I used the ESC key to reboot after which I would have inserted my W-7 Disc. But instead I got a black screen that says:

"A change to the operating system secure mode is pending. Please enter the pass code displayed below to complete the change. If you did not initiate this request, press the ESC key to continue without excepting pending change.

Operating System Boot Mode Change (021)

2107 + ENTER -Complete the change

ESC to continue without change

ESC - continue without changing

For more information please visit www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup"

But there is no entry box to enter this code number and just entering the code on the keyboard had no response. The only response I can get is to use the EXC key which continues with out saving changes.

I contacted hp support and talked to 2 different people who both told me that upgrading or downgrading is not covered on the warranty and that it's a Microsoft Issue. I spoke to both level 1 and level 2 Microsoft support who told me that this is a BIOS Setup thing that is code set up by HP.

It has since dawned on me that anyone trying to load Linux might be up against the same problem not being able to load another operating system. My thinking is that Microsoft is just not allowing anyone to remove W10 and install any other OS and has contracted the Manufactures to put this roadblock into their Motherboards' firmware.

Any ideas?

Hi @HP55Novice,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query. I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that you are facing issues with your HP Notebook - 15-ba053nr wherein you cannot save the changes to the Bios namely enabling the Legacy mode and disabling the Secure Boot.

This issue could occur if the system generated code is not entered.

Let's go through a few steps that may help to fix this issue from the link: Secure Boot (Windows 10)

Note: You may follow the steps under Using Secure Boot on a desktop computer in the above document.

Let me know if this works.

You have a good day ahead.

Thank you for your response.  After doing exactly as per instructions to enable legacy mode and disable secure boot, have I  got the screen shown below.  I did what the instructions said to do. I copied and pasted here:

"As soon as the computer starts, a message may appear indicating that the boot mode has changed, if so, type the four-digit code shown in the message, then press Enter to confirm the change. Otherwise, continue with the next step.
Figure : Boot mode change message
   NOTE:
Make sure you type the code correctly, since there is no text field to see what you are typing. This is expected behavior. When you type the numbers, the code is logged without a text field.
The computer starts Windows 10.

When I got to this black screen message,  I typed the 4 number code and pressed the enter key as per these instructions.  But the computer does not start Windows 10 .

As mentioned in the instructions "there is no text field to see what you are typing. This is expected behavior. When you type the numbers, the code is logged without a text field."

But when I hit enter after the four number code, there is no restart.  This screen does not respond in any way to anything but the ESC key which restarts/reboots but the changes are not saved.

Any help in saving these changes will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Thanks for the reply.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP.

They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number.

Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact.

Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forum.

Hi  Chimney_83

Thank you!!

As per Chimney_83, I was contacted by the someone presumably from the appropriate team within HP. It was I believe an off forum personal request for all pertinent information which was on the forum other than my name. After responding, I got a basic repetition of the instruction which I followed several times which led to a dead end in trying to save changes to the Bios.

I responded by restating my issue because it seemed what I thought is a pretty strait forward problem was not understood.  I have over the last several days not received any response and my issue remains unsolved.  I also don't understand why the contact was moved to private communications instead of allowing the forum to view how this issue might be handled and/or solved by HP.

It applies to anyone who might want to move to Windows 7 or even install Linux on any computer that was factory installed with Windows 10. By the way I spoke to Microsoft's 2nd level tech support and they assured me this is an HP issue.

I am having the same issue however mine started because of the latest Windows 10 updates. I have spent the week working through all the steps found on the blogs and now I'm trying this change of the Secure Boot and Enabling Legacy settings so I can boot the computer through my USB.

Did HP ever get back with you on how to handle the issue?

I entered the code, and have attempted all the steps three different times.

The system is still not allowing the Operating System Boot Mode Change.

I have the same model and the same problem. 1 year and one month after purchase I am getting a hard drive imminent failure notice. I bought a new SSD hard drive for $100.00. I can not get the boot settings to save. Tried everything I found on the net. Nothing works. All the tech shops by me want to charge $130.00 to install windows 10 on the new hard drive. For $230.00 I can buy another new crapo HP computer. I have no internet at home and hot spot through my phone. Everytime I log on the windows 10 auto update hijacks my computer and I can't do crap until it finishes mean wile using all my data. I hate it. Just going to take that $230.00 and put it towards a new Mac. Only bought the HP cause I didn't want to spend $1000.00+ on a new computer. $399.00 for the HP computer, $100.00 new hard drive, $130.00 tech charge. I'm half way there. Should have just bought the Mac in the first place. Oh, and I won't go into what a pain in the butt my HP printer is.
