Hi @Chrys8,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're noticing a large number of processes and high memory usage on your HP notebook, here are a few steps you can take to reduce the load and improve performance.
Check for Unnecessary Background Processes
- Open Task Manager (press Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to see all active processes.
- Review the list and identify any applications or background processes that you don't need running.
- Right-click on unnecessary processes and select End Task to stop them temporarily. Be cautious not to end system-critical processes.
Disable Startup Programs
- In Task Manager, go to the Startup tab.
- Disable any programs you don’t need starting automatically when your laptop boots up by right-clicking on them and selecting Disable.
Uninstall Unused Programs
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall any applications that you no longer use, as they may be running in the background and consuming resources.
Run a Malware/Adware Scan
- Sometimes, high memory usage can be caused by malware or adware. Run a full scan using Windows Defender or another trusted antivirus tool to ensure your system is clean.
Check for System Updates
- Outdated drivers or Windows versions can also contribute to performance issues. Go to Settings > Windows Update and install any available updates.
Adjust Power Settings
- Open Control Panel > Power Options.
- Choose a power plan that balances performance and energy savings, or select High Performance if you want to prioritize performance.
Reduce Visual Effects
- Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > Settings (under Performance).
- Choose Adjust for best performance to disable unnecessary visual effects that can consume system resources.

Increase Virtual Memory (Paging File)
- If you have limited RAM, you can adjust the paging file to increase virtual memory:
- Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > Settings (under Performance).
- Under Virtual memory, click Change, uncheck Automatically manage paging file size, and increase the size of the paging file.
Consider Adding More RAM
- If your HP notebook supports it, you might want to upgrade your RAM if you're consistently running out of memory.
Restart Your Laptop
- If you haven’t already, a simple restart can help clear any processes that have been running for too long or have hung up.
After completing these steps, your system should run more efficiently with fewer background processes taking up resources.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
