Microsoft Windows 11

My HP laptop does not recognize my Android phone. A previous solution said to update the HTP driver for the Android phone via the Device Manager. The Device Manager does not show my Android under the USB controller tree. I have used various USB-C cords.

Hi @Sluggo0424

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you have already tried different USB-C cables and that the Android device is not appearing under the USB controllers in Device Manager. Since the laptop is not detecting the phone at all, I would recommend checking the USB connection mode on the phone and verifying the USB/chipset drivers on the HP laptop.

Could you please confirm your HP laptop model, Windows version, and Android phone model? This information will help us identify the correct drivers and provide the most appropriate troubleshooting steps. Meanwhile I would request you to please follow the below steps.

Check Device Manager for hidden or unknown devices

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Click View from the top menu.
  • Select Show hidden devices.
  • Expand:
  • Portable Devices
  • Other Devices
  • Universal Serial Bus controllers
  • Android Device (if available)
  • Look for: Unknown Device
  • MTP USB Device
  • Android Composite ADB Interface
  • Any device with a yellow warning icon
  • Right-click the device and select:
  • Uninstall device
  • Check Attempt to remove the driver if available.
  • Disconnect the phone, restart the laptop, reconnect the phone, and allow Windows to reinstall the driver.

Update USB and chipset drivers from HP

  • Go to the HP Support website.
  • Enter your laptop model or use HP Support Assistant.
  • Install the latest:
  • Chipset driver
  • USB controller driver
  • BIOS update
  • Restart the laptop.

Test with another computer

Connect the same phone and cable to another computer:

  • If another computer detects it  the issue is likely with the HP USB drivers/settings.
  • If no computer detects it the issue may be the phone USB port, cable, or phone USB settings.

Have a good day.

Take care and have an amazing day!
