Can I just use a black cartridge to print things in the M454dn printer

Hi @Nadia930,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The HP LaserJet Pro M454dn printer uses a four-cartridge system, which includes separate toner cartridges for black, cyan, magenta, and yellow. To ensure proper functionality and to maintain the printer's system health, it is designed to require all four cartridges to be installed and to have toner in them, even if you are only printing in black and white.

This means you cannot use the printer with only the black toner cartridge; the printer needs all four cartridges to be operational. If you attempt to print without one of the cartridges or with an empty cartridge, the printer will usually give an error message and stop printing until the missing or empty cartridge is replaced.

If your main concern is to maximize the use of black toner and minimize the usage of color toners, you can adjust the printer settings on your computer to print in black and white (or grayscale) mode.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
