Hi, I've been having this little problem since I bought this PC (years ago). Since it's irrelevant, I never gave it any thoughts, but lately I was thinking about solving the situation. During use, the PC tends to freeze for a few moments, and then resumes normally with what it was doing. If i'm watching a movie even the sound glitch for a moment, then go back to normal. It's a problem not caused by any action in particular, it happens every x time, usually at least 1 time, from when I turn it on to when I turn it off, it always happens. I checked the drivers and they are all updated, so I don't know if it's some hardware component that's causing the problem. My PC model is HP Pavilion 15, ryzen 7, gtx 1660ti and 16gb of ram.
The only change I made at the hardware is replacing the old hard disk with a more performing ssd. The problem already existed a priori though.
I hope I've given enough info, thanks in advance 🙂

Hi @Simo030919 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing the freezing issue you're experiencing with your HP Pavilion 15, which could be related to a few potential factors. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take to help diagnose and potentially resolve the problem:
1. Check for Thermal Throttling:
Since your PC is a few years old, thermal throttling due to overheating could cause these intermittent freezes. You can:
- Monitor your temperatures using tools like HWMonitor or Core Temp.
- If temperatures are high, consider cleaning out any dust from the vents and applying new thermal paste on the CPU/GPU if you're comfortable doing so.
2. Check for SSD-related Issues:
Since you've replaced the old hard drive with a new SSD, it's important to ensure the SSD is functioning properly. Even though the problem existed before, issues can still stem from storage performance:
- Update SSD firmware: Check the manufacturer's website for any available firmware updates for your SSD.
- Check SSD health: Use software like CrystalDiskInfo to check the health of the SSD and ensure there are no bad sectors or performance degradation.
3. Disable Unnecessary Startup Programs:
Sometimes background processes can cause occasional stutters and freezes. Try:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, go to the Startup tab, and disable non-essential programs.
4. Update BIOS/Chipset Drivers:
Outdated BIOS or chipset drivers can cause system freezes. Even though you mentioned updating drivers, make sure the BIOS and chipset drivers are up to date:
- Visit HP's official website to check for the latest updates for your specific model.
5. Check for Windows Background Services:
Some background Windows services can cause freezing or interruptions:
- Disable Windows Search Indexing by typing services.msc in the Start menu, finding Windows Search, and setting it to Disabled.
- Disable Superfetch/Prefetch if you haven't already.
6. Run Memory Diagnostics:
Faulty RAM can cause the system to freeze intermittently. To check for memory issues:
- Type mdsched.exe in the Start menu and run the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool.
7. Check for Event Viewer Errors:
Event Viewer logs can give clues about what's causing system freezes:
- Type eventvwr in the Start menu, open Event Viewer, and check Windows Logs > System for any critical or error messages that align with the freezing.
8. Run a System File Check:
Corrupted system files can cause freezing. To repair any corrupt files: sfc /scannow
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run the following commands:and DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
9. Consider Power Settings:
Sometimes, power settings can cause performance issues. Try switching to High Performance mode:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options and select High Performance.
Refer to this document: HP PCs - Computer locks up or freezes (Windows 11, 10)
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
