I have taken delivery today of a laptop and started to set up. After setting up wi-fi, I was taken to a page for confirmation to accept McAFee and Microsoft (the specs when I ordered it specifically said No Microsoft). As I have my own preferred providers and am partway through a perfectly good security provider, how do I remove both. The only button I can see to press is ACCEPT

Can you help please as this is most disappointing when I have just opened the package

hi

I don't see what you mean here
"the specs when I ordered it specifically said No Microsoft)"
whatever, I'm amazed, if you have no choice..
but when I had installed my computer, the antivirus program, was not completely installed after startup
but after the trial version, I had deleted it, not very difficult
if you then talk about microsoft security software, it must automatically deactivate when installing another antivirus

[edit] @Muirside  I had not read the mention of S mode, seen after
so trust the excellent answer of mr @Paul_Tikkanen

Windows 10 or 11 in S mode

Some features will be a little different if you're running Windows 10 or 11 in S mode. Because this mode is streamlined for tighter security, the Virus & threat protection area has fewer options. But don't worry—the built-in security of this mode automatically prevents viruses and other threats from running on your device, and you'll receive security updates automatically. For more info, see Windows 10 or 11 in S mode FAQ.

Hi, @Muirside

You can only install apps from the Microsoft Store on PC's running Windows in S mode.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 in S mode FAQ (microsoft.com)

If you have a security app that you cannot install from the Microsoft Store you will have to switch out of S mode to install any programs you need.

My thanks as a new member seeking help, my appreciation to Promethee and Paul_Tikkanen. I can see that things have moved on greatly since my last laptop purchase and that I will have to cancel my allegiance to the old products and embrace the world of HP Windows 11s.

Thank you again

Muirside

Glad to have been of assistance.

Yes, we recommend all Windows devices use antivirus software. Currently, the only antivirus software known to be compatible with Windows 10 in S mode is the version that comes with it: Windows Defender Security Center. Windows Defender Security Center delivers a robust suite of security features that help keep you safe for the supported lifetime of your Windows 10 device. For more info, see Windows 10 security.

Also note that by exclusively using apps from Microsoft Store and browsing safely with Microsoft Edge, Windows 10 in S mode keeps you running more quickly and securely day in and day out.

If you want to use another antivirus software provider, you can ask if they offer a product that runs on a Windows 10 device in S mode.

Good continuation @Muirside
Glad to have been of assistance.
