Hi @Cathy6143,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Error code 0x800f081f typically indicates that Windows is unable to find the necessary files to complete an update installation. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue.
Run Windows Update Troubleshooter:
- Open Settings by pressing Win + I, then go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Run the Windows Update Troubleshooter and follow the on-screen instructions.
Check Disk Space:
- Ensure that your laptop has enough free space for the update. Windows updates require sufficient disk space to download and install.
Reset Windows Update Components:
- Sometimes, resetting the Windows Update components can resolve update issues. Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run the following commands one by one:
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver
- After running these commands, restart your computer and try updating again.
Download and Install the Update Manually:
- Go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
- Search for the update using its KB number (you can find this in the update history).
- Download the update that matches your system architecture (e.g., x64 for 64-bit systems).
- Run the downloaded update file and follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
Check System Files:
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run the command sfc /scannow to scan and repair any corrupted system files.
- After the scan is complete, restart your computer and try updating again.
Check for Third-Party Software Conflicts:
- Sometimes, security software or other third-party applications can interfere with Windows updates. Temporarily disable any third-party antivirus software and try updating again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
