HP Notebook - 17-ca0014ds

I have been trying to find solutions to this problem through windows but nothing has really helped.

I recently did a reset.

I now see my DVD player(E:) listed in My Computer and device manager when before it was there then eventually disappeared after I tried things on the Windows solution list.  "

Now it's back again but I don't know for how long and I don't know what causes it to become "not connected."

Does anyone know how I can keep my internal DVD-Rom from fluctuating from connected to not connected?

Hi @ShaWral,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I'm sorry to hear about the fluctuating connection with your DVD-ROM drive. It must be frustrating to deal with this intermittent issue, especially after trying various solutions. Let’s try to get to the root of the problem. Here are some questions to narrow down the cause:

  • Have you noticed any patterns or triggers, such as installing updates, restarting the system, or performing specific tasks, that coincide with the drive disappearing?
  • Did you check if the drive's connection to the motherboard is secure after the reset? Physical connection issues might cause intermittent behavior.
  • Are you using any third-party software for managing or accessing the DVD drive that might interfere with its recognition?

Let's try these steps.

Update or Reinstall the DVD Driver:

  • Open Device Manager > Expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives.
  • Right-click your DVD drive and select Uninstall Device. Restart the computer to let Windows reinstall the driver automatically.
  • If it’s already up-to-date, visit HP’s support page to check for any firmware updates for your specific DVD drive model.

Run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter:

  • Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional Troubleshooters.
  • Look for and run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter to detect and resolve potential conflicts.

Check Power Management Settings:

  • In Device Manager, right-click the DVD drive, select Properties, and go to the Power Management tab (if available).
  • Uncheck the option to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Inspect BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Restart your laptop and press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS/UEFI.
  • Check if the DVD drive is listed and enabled in the hardware configuration.

Ensure a Secure Physical Connection:

  • If you’re comfortable, power off the laptop, disconnect it from power, and remove the back cover.
  • Check that the DVD drive’s connection to the motherboard is firm and free from dust or debris.

If the problem persists, it could be a hardware issue with the DVD drive itself or the motherboard's SATA/IDE interface. You might consider replacing the drive or using an external DVD drive as a backup solution.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Thank you for the list of things to try.

I went to the BIOS screen but I need more detailed instructions of what to do when I get there.

In any case I didn't see a DVD-Rom listed in System Setup.

When I restarted my computer the DVD-Rom was suddenly "connected" and working again.

Now if I can just get this to be a permanent fix I will be happy.

Hi @ShaWral,

I'm glad to hear the DVD-ROM is working again after a restart! To help make the fix more permanent, you can try the following steps:

Update the BIOS:

  • While in the BIOS screen, check the current BIOS version.
  • Visit the support page for your computer model on HP’s website and download the latest BIOS update if available. Follow the instructions to install it. This can help resolve hardware detection issues.

Check and Reconfigure Boot Order:

  • In the BIOS, ensure the DVD-ROM is listed in the boot order.
  • If it’s not listed, enable it under the hardware settings or reseat the connections physically (if you are comfortable with hardware adjustments).

Update Device Drivers:

  • Once the system boots, go to Device Manager, locate the DVD-ROM under "DVD/CD-ROM Drives," right-click, and select Update driver.
  • If it's missing, use the "Scan for hardware changes" option.

These steps should help stabilize the connection and make the fix more reliable!

Hope this helps!

Hi,

When I turned on my laptop today the DVD-rom was not detectable.

I followed the instructions to get into BIOS and observe the system configuration.

I did see the "internal DVD" drive listed and it was listed as "enabled."

If I'm not mistaken this means that this is not a hardware issue, correct?

So, if it is not a hardware issue what do I have to do with the software to keep DVD drive detectable by the computer?

By the way, just like last time when I got out of BIOS and went back to regular mode I saw that my DVD drive was listed as "working properly" in device manager.

Also, no attempt to update the driver has been successful. The response is always that the driver is already optimally updated.
