So I'm looking to make use if hdmi 2.0 but my device has 1.4. After researching a bit I found that some devices only require a firmware update where as other's hardware still wouldn't be compatible. So I was wondering if hp simply had a firmware update or not. Thank you.

Hi! @Joshm18, Welcome to HP forums.
I understand you would like to know if you can upgrade HDMI 1.4 version to 2.0 on your PC.
Don't worry I'd like to help you out.
Did you make any software or hardware changes on your PC?
Do you have connection issues using the HDMI connection on your PC?
The answer is no and there is no firmware update to change HDMI 1.4 version to 2.0.
It is a graphics card limitation, to change it from HDMI 1.4 to 2.0 version you have to upgrade the graphics card on your laptop.
However, as you are using a laptop graphics card upgrade is not possible as the graphics card is embedded in the system board.
So you have to replace the entire system board to upgrade the graphics card.
Refer the laptop user guide to know more information. Click Here
Note: Refer page 4 for more information.
If you have HDMI connection issues you can try the steps recommended below and check if it helps.
Try connecting the TV to a different HDMI port and check if the issue persists.
Also, connect the TV to a different PC and check if you are able to see the display.
Try restoring the BIOS to default and check if it helps.
1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
