Hello HP Community,
I’m experiencing a recurring issue with my HP Laptop 15-dy2xxx. Every time I power on the laptop, it shows a BIOS error. I’ve accessed the BIOS settings using the function keys and selected “Restore Defaults”, saved the changes, and exited. Unfortunately, the issue persists on every restart on next day.
Here are the key details:
Laptop Model: HP Laptop 15-dy2xxx, windows 11
Issue Description: BIOS screen or error appears frequently during startup
Troubleshooting Steps Tried:
Entered BIOS using function keys (Esc/F10)
Restored default settings and saved
Rebooted, but the BIOS screen/error still appears on next day turning on..
I would appreciate any guidance on what could be causing this. Could it be a CMOS battery issue, outdated BIOS, or some hardware fault? Should I consider updating or flashing the BIOS?
Looking forward to your suggestions and support.
Thanks,

Hi @Shiv_Kumar1
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thanks for laying out the situation so clearly. That recurring BIOS error on startup—despite restoring defaults—is understandably frustrating, especially when it reappears after a clean shutdown.
Let’s walk through a structured approach to help resolve it.
Verify BIOS Update:
- Ensure that your BIOS is up-to-date. You can check for the latest BIOS update on the HP Support website by entering your laptop's model number. Follow the instructions provided on the website to update the BIOS.
Run HP Hardware Diagnostics:
- Use the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool to perform a diagnostic check. This tool can help identify any hardware issues causing the BIOS error.
- To access the tool, restart the computer and repeatedly press Esc, then select F2 to run diagnostics.
Check for Hardware Changes or Loose Connections:
- If you have recently added or changed any hardware components, remove or reseat them to ensure they are properly connected.
- Check for any visible damage or loose connections internally if you're comfortable opening your laptop.
Clear CMOS/Reset BIOS:
- The CMOS might need to be reset to resolve the error. This typically involves physically resetting the CMOS battery on the laptop's motherboard and might require assistance from HP support or a technician.
Ensure Secure Boot is Enabled:
- Sometimes disabling Secure Boot can cause errors. Enter BIOS setup and ensure Secure Boot is enabled, and confirm all settings are correct.
Perform a Recovery or Reset:
- As a last resort, perform a system recovery or reset Windows, which can sometimes resolve persistent BIOS errors linked to software issues.
Additional Tips:
Keep a Backup: Always make sure to back up important data before making significant changes or performing a recovery operation.
Seek Professional Help: If the problem persists, it might be necessary to contact HP Support or visit an authorized service provider for further assistance.
Let me know what you observe after trying these steps. You're clearly being thorough—let’s get this resolved.
