After reinstalling fresh versions of Windows (either Windows 10 or 11), both the trackpad and keyboard do not function. The hardware is fine, in the BIOS they work okay. Tablet mode is disabled. BIOS and all drivers are updated to latest version. What else can I try?

Hi @BestDeal4U,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Since the hardware is functioning in the BIOS and the issue persists only in Windows after a fresh installation, it suggests that the problem may be related to drivers or settings in Windows. Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue.
Check Device Manager for Driver Issues
- Boot into Windows and open Device Manager (press Windows Key + X and select Device Manager).
- Expand Keyboards and Mice and other pointing devices. Look for any devices with a yellow exclamation mark or if the devices are missing.
- If you see any issues, right-click the device and select Update driver > Search automatically for updated driver software.
Manually Reinstall Keyboard and Trackpad Drivers
- Download the latest keyboard and touchpad drivers from the HP Support website for your specific HP Pavilion x360 model.
- Install these drivers manually, then restart your computer.
Enable HID Services
Sometimes, the Human Interface Device (HID) services responsible for keyboard and trackpad functionality may be disabled.
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find Human Interface Device Service in the list. Double-click it.
- Ensure the Startup type is set to Automatic, and if the service is not running, click Start.
Uninstall and Reinstall Drivers in Safe Mode
- Boot into Safe Mode: Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and go to the Boot tab. Check the Safe boot box, then click OK and restart your system.
- In Safe Mode, uninstall the keyboard and touchpad drivers from Device Manager.
- Restart your system to let Windows reinstall the drivers automatically.
Check for Conflicting Software
Sometimes third-party software, especially input-related programs, can interfere with Windows functionality. Ensure that no software (e.g., external keyboard or mouse drivers) is causing the issue.
Reset BIOS Settings
If the issue persists despite updating drivers and software, try resetting your BIOS settings to default.
- Restart your laptop and press F10 to enter BIOS.
- Select Restore Defaults in the BIOS and save the settings.
- Restart your computer and check if the keyboard and trackpad work after booting into Windows.
Test with External Keyboard and Mouse
- Connect an external USB keyboard and mouse. If they work, it indicates that Windows recognizes input devices, and the issue might be limited to the internal keyboard and trackpad drivers.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden,
- Device Manager shows no items with the yellow exclamation mark, scanning for hardware changes does not add anything either. The keyboard and trackpad items are there, and drivers are installed for them.
- HID service is set to Automatic.
- Uninstalling them via Safe Mode as directed, as well as manually (using the latest ones from the HP website for this model), both result in no change.
- No third party software is interfering, these are fresh installations of Windows.
- Resetting BIOS to defaults makes no difference.
- Obviously external USB keyboard and mice work to be able to perform above tests.
Still no keyboard or mouse capabilities within Windows.

Hi @BestDeal4U,
Thank you for your response,
It sounds like you've already done an extensive amount of troubleshooting on your HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14. Given that the keyboard and trackpad are functional in BIOS but not in Windows, and considering you've already performed a fresh installation of Windows, here are some additional steps you can take to further investigate and potentially resolve the issue.
Check Windows Accessibility Settings
Sometimes, accessibility features can interfere with keyboard and trackpad functionality.
- Sticky Keys/Filter Keys:
- Go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard.
- Ensure that Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, and Filter Keys are turned off.
Check Windows Update
Ensure that your system is fully updated:
- Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any available updates. Sometimes, Windows updates include crucial driver updates or fixes.
Run Hardware Troubleshooter
Windows has built-in troubleshooters that can help identify and fix issues.
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Run the Keyboard and Hardware and Devices troubleshooters to see if they identify any issues.
Check Power Management Settings
Sometimes, Windows may disable devices to save power.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards and Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click your keyboard and trackpad, select Properties, and go to the Power Management tab.
- Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power if it's checked.
Modify Registry Settings
If you’re comfortable making changes to the Windows Registry, you can try adjusting some settings:
- Press Windows + R, type regedit, and hit Enter.
- Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HidServ
- Ensure that the Start value is set to 2 (Automatic).
Check for System Conflicts
Perform a clean boot to see if a startup program might be causing the issue:
- Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
- In the System Configuration window, go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, and then click Disable all.
- Next, go to the Startup tab and click Open Task Manager. Disable all startup items.
- Restart your computer and check if the keyboard and trackpad work.

Reinstall Windows Drivers
If possible, try to install older versions of the drivers for the keyboard and trackpad. Sometimes, the latest drivers can have compatibility issues:
- Check the HP Support website for previous driver versions for your model.
Test with Live USB Environment
If you have a USB drive, create a bootable Linux USB (like Ubuntu) and boot from it. This can help determine if the keyboard and trackpad work in a different operating system environment.
Hardware Check
If none of the above solutions work, it might indicate a deeper hardware issue:
- If you’re comfortable opening your laptop, check the connections for the keyboard and trackpad.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

- Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, and Filter Keys are all disabled
- Windows is fully updated
- Troublsehooter cannot detect any issues
- Power management option is disabled
- Start value in HidServ is set to 2
- Restarting with non-Microsoft services disabled and all startup programs disabled made no changes

- The HP driver page only shows one option for Windows 10 (after selecting both the generic Windows 10 option and the specific quality release), attempted older versions for Windows 11 as well.
- Still no functionality when I boot into Ubuntu. Also for reference the F button functions such as brightness etc don't work either at that stage.
- I have re-seated the keyboard and trackpad cabling, no changes. But as mentioned they both work within the BIOS so it isn't a hardware issue.
