Hi

Few weeks ago my keyboard malfunctioning appearing letters that i dont even type. What I did was I disabled one of the usb port of my laptop then I decided to use the built in keyboard. Problem solved! I decided to try the external keyboard to my other laptop and its working fine so I decided to put it back to my hp laptop. I tried to make the port working again then I removed and uninstalled those usb ports with error on the device manager. Then I check for system updates. When trying to install the windows 11 I saw that my laptop did not meet the minimum requirements. I decided to restart my laptop to my surprise everything is not working now! The built in keyboard, the touchpad are not working! I tried to use an external keyboard and mouse but they are not working as well, I believe because I uninstalled the drivers. The touch screen is not working as well. Now I do not know how can i fix this issue now. Please help

Hi @Shanev2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're stoked to have you on board!

To help us get started on resolving your issue, could you please share the model name of your device?

Meanwhile, you can try these steps:

Perform a Hard Reset

Shut down the laptop completely.

Disconnect the power adapter and remove the battery (if removable).

Hold the power button for 15–20 seconds to drain residual power.

Reconnect only the power adapter and turn it back on to check if basic functions are restored.

Boot Into BIOS/UEFI

Restart the laptop and repeatedly tap Esc / F10 / Del (varies by model) to enter BIOS.

In BIOS, check if the built-in keyboard and touchpad respond.

If they work here, the issue is with Windows drivers, not hardware.

Access Advanced Startup Options

Since neither keyboard, touchpad, nor USB are working, try force shutdown the laptop three times in a row (power on, as soon as Windows logo appears, power off).

On the third attempt, it should boot into Windows Recovery Environment.

Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Repair or System Restore if a recent restore point exists.

Enable On-Screen Keyboard

In the Recovery Environment, use the Ease of Access > On-Screen Keyboard option.

This allows you to navigate and type using the touchscreen (if it responds) or an external mouse.

Reinstall Drivers via Safe Mode

From Recovery, go to Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.

Press 4 (Safe Mode) to boot into Safe Mode.

In Safe Mode, Windows should automatically reinstall missing USB, keyboard, and touchpad drivers.

If not, open Device Manager and click Action > Scan for hardware changes.

Update Drivers

If Safe Mode restores input temporarily, download the latest drivers for your model from the HP Support Website.

Reinstall chipset, keyboard, touchpad, and USB controller drivers.

I hope this helps.

Hi,

I used System Restore, and luckily, the built in touchpad and mouse are working now. My problem is I uninstalled all usb root hub 3 and other USB port options under Universal Serial Bus, now none were left and I don't know how to retrieve them. I am using the Hp PC Diagnostic and Update the bios firmware but still the ports are not working. I checked my Device Manager and the Universal Serial Bus is now missing.  I am using windows 10, 64 bit.Core i5-7th gen. How do I know what chipset to installed, I provided my laptop model and it under driver-chipset there are 33 options.

Hi @Shanev2,

Thanks for the update! 😊

I understand that your touchpad and built-in keyboard are now working, but all USB ports are still missing because the USB controllers were uninstalled. Since the Device Manager shows no Universal Serial Bus entries, this is typically related to missing chipset drivers, which include USB controllers.

Here’s how to move forward:

Identify Your Laptop Model

Make sure you have the exact product name and number of your HP laptop. This will ensure you download the correct drivers.

Download the Chipset Driver

Visit the HP Support Drivers page and enter your laptop model.

Navigate to Drivers > Chipset.

Look for Intel Chipset Driver (for Core i5 7th Gen, it should be under “Intel Chipset Installation Utility” or similar).

Install the Chipset Driver

Download and run the installer.

This should reinstall all essential chipset drivers, including USB controllers, restoring functionality to your USB ports.

After installation, restart your laptop.

Verify in Device Manager

After reboot, open Device Manager (Win + X > Device Manager) and check under Universal Serial Bus controllers.

Your USB ports should now appear.

Optional: Update BIOS/Firmware

If any USB ports still don’t work, make sure your BIOS is up to date. HP PC Hardware Diagnostics can also confirm that all USB controllers are detected.

Tip: Avoid manually uninstalling multiple system drivers at once, as Windows may not automatically reinstall them if critical chipset components are removed.

I hope this helps.
