Subject: Issue with Docking Station Shutting Off When Connected to HP Envy Laptop

Hi [HP Support Team],

I’m reaching out for some help with an issue I’ve been having with my HP Envy 17-CR001 laptop. I’ve tried using two different docking stations, and both are experiencing the same problem.

Essentially, as soon as I connect the docking station to my laptop, the dock shuts off. I’ve tried updating all drivers and firmware, power cycling both devices, and using different cables, but the issue persists. The docking stations work fine until they’re connected to the laptop, which makes me think it might be something with the laptop’s signal or power delivery.

I’d appreciate any guidance or steps you can suggest to resolve this. Thanks so much for your help!

Best regards,
Curt

Hi @CurtAlert,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Based on your description and the support documentation from HP, it sounds like your HP Envy 17-CR001 laptop may be experiencing a power delivery or compatibility issue with the docking stations, especially since both docks shut off immediately upon connection.

Recommended Steps to Resolve Dock Shutoff Issue

1. Check USB-C Port Type

Your HP Envy 17-CR001 may have multiple USB-C ports, but not all support power delivery or video output. Make sure you're using the Thunderbolt 4 or USB-C port with full docking support.

  • Look for a lightning bolt icon next to the port.
  • Refer to your laptop to confirm port capabilities.

2. Update Thunderbolt and USB-C Drivers

Even if you’ve updated general drivers, make sure these specific ones are installed:

  • Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver
  • HP USB-C Dock Firmware
  • HP BIOS Update

3. Disable USB-C Power Delivery in BIOS (if available)

Some HP laptops allow you to toggle USB-C power delivery settings in BIOS:

  • Restart and press Esc > F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Look under Advanced > Power Management.
  • Disable or adjust USB-C PD settings.

4. Try a Powered Dock

If your dock relies on the laptop for power, it may shut off due to insufficient delivery. Use a dock with its own power adapter and ensure it’s plugged in before connecting to the laptop.

5. Test with Minimal Peripherals

Disconnect all external devices from the dock (monitors, USB drives, etc.) and connect only the dock to the laptop. If it stays on, reconnect peripherals one by one to isolate the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
