Microsoft Windows 11

Hello. My HP laptop does not want to perform the following update: Hewlett-Packard - USB - 2/10/2017 12:00:00 AM - 44.1.2402.1741 and continues to say this when I try to perform it: Install error - 0x80070103. As a result of this, my touchpad is not working properly in the Human Interface Devices section of the Device Manager. It sometimes works, or does not. When not working, it will say that the device could not start. I have tried all of the advice that I have been given before - to disable and enable it, to uninstall and power off the laptop to allow it to reinstall, to attempt to roll back the driver, but all solutions have not been long term. From hours of looking at how to fix this issue, it has boiled down to the fact that the laptop does not want to update. This update has not been able to install since November. Please tell me how I can get it to install.

Hi @hkpaterson

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The error code 0x80070103 typically indicates that a driver update has failed because the version of the driver you’re trying to install is the same or older than the one currently installed, or there’s an issue with the update process itself.

Here’s how you can resolve this issue and manage updates that have failed:

1. Remove the Failed Update from Windows Update

You can try to remove the problematic update manually. Here’s how to do it:

Open Windows Update Settings:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
  • Click on View update history.
  • Click on Uninstall updates. This will open the Installed Updates window in Control Panel.
  • Locate the update that corresponds to the error (e.g., Hewlett-Packard USB driver).
  • Select the update and click Uninstall. Follow the prompts to remove the update.

2. Check for Driver Updates via Device Manager

  • Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.:
  • Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers and locate the Hewlett-Packard USB driver.
  • Right-click on the HP USB driver and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
  • If updating doesn’t work, right-click the driver and choose Uninstall device.
  • Restart your computer. Windows should attempt to reinstall the driver automatically.

3. Manually Download and Install the Driver

  • Go to HP Support.
  • Enter your printer model and download the latest driver available for your device.
  • Run the downloaded driver file and follow the installation instructions.

4. Clear Windows Update Cache

Clearing the Windows Update cache can resolve issues with failed updates:

  • Right-click on the Start button and select Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
  • Type the following commands and press Enter after each:
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\ and delete all files and folders in this directory.
  • Restart the services with these commands:
  • Go back to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates again.

5. Use Windows Troubleshooter

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
  • Select Windows Update and run the troubleshooter. Follow the prompts to fix any issues found.

I hope this helps.
