Laptop is a year old, normal use for college student; battery no longer charged, received assistance from genius squad, was told that battery needed to be replaced. Purchased 3rd party battery, didn't charge/work. Spoke to HP support, was told that 3rd party batteries do not work in HP laptops; purchased an HP battery from parts store; laptop still doesn't recognize battery. Laptop only works with charger. How do i resolve this? Warranty has expired.

Hi @EP44 ,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you've already tried a new, genuine HP battery and your laptop still isn't recognizing it, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:
Check Battery Connection:
- Ensure that the battery is properly connected to the laptop. Sometimes, a loose connection can prevent the battery from being detected.
Update BIOS/UEFI:
- Make sure that your laptop's BIOS or UEFI firmware is up to date. Sometimes, manufacturers release updates that address battery recognition issues.
Device Manager Check:
- Open the Device Manager on your laptop (you can do this by right-clicking on the Start button and selecting "Device Manager").
- Look for the "Batteries" category and expand it.
- Right-click on the entries under "Batteries" and uninstall them.
- Restart your laptop, and Windows should reinstall the battery drivers.
Reset Power Management:
- Open a Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Type the following commands one by one and press Enter after each:
- Restart your laptop and check if the battery is now recognized.
- powercfg /restoredefaultschemes
powercfg /setactive scheme_current
HP Diagnostic Tools:
- HP provides diagnostic tools that can help identify hardware issues. You can download and run the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics tool to check the battery and other hardware components.
Reinstall Battery Drivers:
- Uninstall the battery drivers from the Device Manager.
- Restart your laptop, and Windows should reinstall the drivers.
Check for Windows Updates:
- Ensure that your operating system is up to date. Install any pending Windows updates.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Shut down the laptop.
- Disconnect the charger.
- Remove the battery (if possible).
- Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
- Reinsert the battery (if removed) and reconnect the charger.
- Turn on the laptop.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi. I've made all the above suggested actions but as soon as I unplug the power adapter cord, the laptop immediately turns off. After that, when loading, it shows a C M O S error and asks to reboot the system. HP Diagnostics does not detect any hardware problems. All drivers are updated. I tried a new battery, the problem is still there. Windows shows the battery and its charge level, but the battery does not charge and the laptop does not work on battery power.
