Recently I have been having a lot of issues with the screen time-out of my computer. Not long ago, it would notify me when my battery reached 12% and 10% in battery level, but it is no longer doing that. I have also noticed that if my computer goes roughly 5 minutes without use, it will shut down instead of going into sleep mode like it used to. I'm sure it is shutting down instead of going into sleep mode because I can no longer turn the screen back on by touching the mouse pad or pressing any of the keys. I have to hold the power button down until it turns back on instead (then I have to log back into my computer). Any help would be greatly appreciated in finding out why my computer is having these problems!

Hi! @KennyO13, Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums!

I understand your laptop shuts down after 5 minutes instead of going to sleep.

Don't worry I'll to help you out.

Did you make any software or hardware changes on your laptop?

Have you tried charging your laptop using a different adapter or battery?

Does your laptop shutdown when you unplug the charger from your PC?

I appriciate your efforts for trying out the steps before reaching out to us.

Try the steps recommended below and check if it helps.

Try updating the BIOS your PC and check if it helps.

Update the BIOS using this link.

Check if the pin inside the DC or charging port is bent or broken.

Please perform below-shown steps to resolve the issue:
Step 01. Click on the Start Button
Step 02. Type "Device Manager" in the start search box & open the Device Manager
Step 03. Look for Batteries and expand it by click on the + symbol on the left
Step 04. Right Click on "Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery" & uninstall
Note: This Battery driver will get reinstalled automatically when you restart the Notebook again
Step 05. Please Shutdown the Notebook
Step 06. Please remove the Battery and unplug the Power Adapter
Step 07. Press and Hold the Power Button for full 1 Minute
Step 08. Go ahead and put back the Battery and connect the Power Adapter
Step 09. Look for "Plugged In Charging" message on the Battery icon

Method 1: Run the Power Troubleshooter

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Type “Troubleshooting” in the search bar and press “Enter”.
  3. In the “Troubleshooting” window, click on “View All” on the left pane.
  4. Click on “Power”.
  5. Click on “Advanced” and then click on “Run as Administrator”.
  6. Click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.

Method 2:

It could be a compatibility issue with the new Fast Startup component.

Try the below steps and check:

  1. Open Control Panel / Power  Options.
  2. On the Left side menu, select  Choose what the power buttons do.
  3. Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  4. Scroll down to the Shutdown settings section.
  5. Remove the check mark from the Turn on Fast Startup option.
  6. Select the Save Changes Button.

Shut Down the computer, wait a couple of minutes and then use the Power Button to start the computer.

Method 3:

I would suggest you to restore default settings of power plan and check if it helps.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Click on the Power Options icon.
  3. Click on Change advanced power settings.
  4. Select the option “Restore default settings for this plan”.
