I just purchased a new HP Pavilion laptop (16-af0063cl) in July.
When I left click on touchpad to select an item, a new selection window shows up instead.
Also, when I move cursor to select for an action, nothing happens. I need to use finger to touch the screen.
These two problems occur all the time. I tried to reduce the mouse speed as someone suggested, but it doesn’t help.

Hi @CW2020,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you’re having trouble with the touchpad on your new HP Pavilion laptop. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:
Update Drivers:
- Go to Device Manager (right-click on the Start menu and select it).
- Expand the Mice and other pointing devices section.
- Right-click on your touchpad device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers and let Windows find and install any updates.
Check Touchpad Settings:
- Open Settings (Win + I).
- Go to Devices > Touchpad.
- Ensure that the touchpad is enabled and adjust the sensitivity settings.
Check for Windows Updates:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates and install any available updates.
Check HP Support:
- Visit the HP Support website and enter your laptop model to see if there are specific drivers or software updates for your touchpad.
Touchpad Diagnostics:
- HP laptops often come with built-in diagnostics tools. You can run these to check for hardware issues.
- Restart your laptop and repeatedly press the Esc key to enter the Startup Menu. Select F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics, then choose Component Test and look for the touchpad test.
Reinstall Touchpad Drivers:
- In Device Manager, right-click on the touchpad device and select Uninstall device.
- Restart your laptop. Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.
Check for Third-Party Software:
- Sometimes, third-party software can interfere with touchpad functionality. Try disabling or uninstalling any such software to see if it resolves the issue.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi Gaya1239,
Thanks for your response.
It says “The best drivers for your device are already installed.” and “You’re up to date.”, when I tried Update Drivers and Window Update.
Then I changed the touchpad sensitivity from Medium to Most, and restarted. However, the problem still occurs intermittently.
