I bought an old Pavilion DV6 that is running windows 7 from an estate sale. It has Internet Explorer, which is defunct and not supported. I tried to install MS Edge that I downloaded onto a thumb drive on a different computer, but it won't install on the Pavilion laptop. What can I do?

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It looks like you're trying to install Microsoft Edge on your Windows 7-based HP Pavilion DV6, but the installer isn't working due to compatibility issues. Let's break down your options and find a solution.

🔍 Why Edge Won’t Install on Windows 7

Microsoft officially ended support for Windows 7 in January 2020, and as of January 2023, the latest versions of Microsoft Edge no longer support Windows 7. This is likely why your installer is failing—it's simply not compatible with your operating system anymore.

Your Options

1. Use an Older Edge Version (Not Recommended, but Possible)

If you absolutely need Edge, you could try to find a legacy version of Edge Chromium v109, which was the last version supported for Windows 7. However, this version is no longer secure or officially supported, so proceed with caution.

⚠️ You'll need to find this through third-party archive websites, which can pose a risk of malware.

2. Use an Alternative Browser

There are still several browsers that offer support for Windows 7:

  • Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release): Mozilla continues to support this version through 115.x ESR, which works on Windows 7.
  • Opera or Vivaldi (older versions): These browsers also supported Windows 7 for longer than Edge.

Just download the installer on your main PC and copy it to your thumb drive.

🛠 What You Can Do Now

  1. On another PC, download:
  2. Copy the installer to your USB stick.
  3. Plug it into your Pavilion DV6.
  4. Run the installer and enjoy a modern browser that still works with Windows 7.

🚀 Bonus: Update TLS Support for IE (Optional)

If you want to use Internet Explorer just to access download sites, you might need to:

  • Enable TLS 1.2 in Internet Options → Advanced → Scroll down to check “Use TLS 1.2”.
  • However, it's best to move on from Internet Explorer entirely.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
