Hello, and Welcome to the HP Support Community!
MicroSoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.) is a software suite that is sold by MicroSoft. You can either purchase it as a standalone installation on your PC, or you can pay for a yearly subscription to "Office 365".
Sometimes a package deal will present itself where "One year of Office 365" or a "Free 30 day trial" of Office will arrive. We get many upset folks here on this Forum who do not understand why "My Office doesn't work anymore" when the 30-day trial period has expired.
One way or another, Office has to be legally purchased. I would talk to your friends again, and dig a little deeper as to how they use the app "free of cost"!
There are other apps that work like office, but are free (Libre Office, etc.) Search the MicroSoft store, or Google for "Office compatible software". https://www.techradar.com/best/free-office-software
