Hi @WinstonB,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how it feels when you just want to get a simple spreadsheet open, and your HP computer refuses to launch Excel. It’s like clicking into an empty doorway… nothing happens, and the silence is frustrating.

But don’t worry, this is a very fixable issue, and we’ll walk through the proper recommended steps together.

STEP 1: Restart the Computer (simple but powerful)

Sometimes Excel gets stuck in the background.

  1. Save anything you're working on
  2. Restart your PC
  3. Try opening Excel again

If it still won’t open, continue below.

STEP 2: Repair Microsoft Office (HP + Microsoft official fix)

This fixes 90% of “Excel won’t open” issues.

  1. Press Windows + R
  2. Type: appwiz.cpl
  3. Press Enter
  4. Find Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365
  5. Click Modify
  6. Choose Quick Repair
  7. If that fails → try Online Repair (more thorough)

STEP 3: Make sure Excel isn’t opening “off-screen”

Sometimes Excel is open, but you just can’t see it.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc → Task Manager
  2. Look for Excel.exe
  3. If you see it → right-click → End task
  4. Try opening Excel again

STEP 4: Start Excel in Safe Mode

This tells us if an add‑in is causing the crash.

  1. Press Windows + R
  2. Type: excel /safe
  3. Hit Enter

If Excel opens in Safe Mode:

  • Go to File → Options → Add-ins → Manage Add-ins → Disable All

Then close Excel and try normally again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
