Pavilion g6-1184sa
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I updated to windows 10 18 months ago, but since December 2017 I have had problems with one of the 1709 updates (it fails to install, yet keeps trying because of the automatic updates built in with windows 10).

I have contacted Microsoft, and they have said that my HP Pavilion g6-1184sa can't cope with the windoes 10 updates.

Should I now be looking at changing to something like windows 8 (my laptop had windows 7 installed when I bought it)?

To answer your questions ...

1) Forcing Update

There is no simple way to do that, right now.

Microsoft is coming out with the Spring Creator's Update (SCU) in April, and a week or so after that release, they will update the Media Creation Tool (MCT) so that it will allow you to download that version and create Win10 installation media from it.  Then when you insert that media into your PC and run setup, it will attempt to upgrade your PC to the SCU.

2) Preventing Updates

You can disable Windows Update but that blocks all security updates, and that puts your PC at risk for malware every time you access the Internet.  So, that is a bad idea.

There is no say to block individual updates as Microsoft disabled that feature in Windows 10.

Hello;

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

There's both good news and bad news in your switching your PC over to Windows 8x.

The good news is that HP shipped that PC with Win8x, so they have drivers for it:  https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-g6-1100-notebook-pc-series/5082224/mode...

The bad news comes in two parts ...

First, you were able to Upgrade to Win10 for free because Microsoft was making that upgrade available for free.  There is no such upgrade from Win7 to Win8x, nor is there a downgrade from Win10 to Win8x.  So basically, you would have to purchase a license to run Win8x on that PC.

Second, MS has stopped support for Win8x and many of the applications supplies only provide updates now for their Win versions.  So, you would be running an unsupported OS version.

Thank you very much. I see what you mean about good news and bad news!

Would you know if there's a way that my current laptop can be upgraded to get windows 10 updates?

Or would another option be to turn off (somehow) the automatic windows 10 updates?

Kind regards

Thank you. I will look out for this from Microsoft during April and try to do what you have so kindly explained.

Many thanks
