HP Pavilion 15 Notebook PC
HP Product Number: E1X73UA#ABA
System Board ID: 1982
Model: 15-e028us
Processor: AMD A6-5350M APU with Radeon Graphics
BIOS: Insyde F.15

I would like to update the BIOS. It is speculative, but I have a problem that a newer BIOS might help solve.

The laptop has two memory slots. The manual says that there is support for a maximum of 8192-MB of system RAM in the following two configurations: (8192-MB×1, 4096-MB×2)
See page 4 at
https://web.archive.org/web/20200111073901/https://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03939658.pdf

It seemed odd to me that the laptop could take 8GB in either slot, but not in both at the same time. So I installed 8GB in both slots. The BIOS says that 16GB is installed.

But from Windows 10:
Control Panel > System
Installed memory (RAM): 16.0 GB (7.22 GB usable)

Of course, I would like the usable amount to be higher.

From page 53:
Update BIOS before adding memory modules
Before adding new memory, make sure you update the computer to the latest BIOS.
CAUTION: Failure to update the computer to the latest BIOS prior to installing new memory may result in various system problems.

@StephenIL,

Below is the link to the BIOS file F.35 (AMD processors).

@StephenIL

The latest BIOS update for your notebook is F.39.

Please excuse my delay in replying. I had to finish my US tax return on the laptop before I could risk updating the BIOS. I am pleased to report that after upgrading to BIOS F.39 and reinstalling the two memory modules, the usable RAM increased from 7.22 GB to 15.2 GB. On a 2013 notebook PC that HP said had a maximum capacity of 8 GB! I think the problem with the F.15 BIOS is that it stayed in single-channel mode when I replaced the single 4 GB module with the two 8 GB modules. With F.39, it is now in dual-channel mode.

I prefer Windows 10 over 11, and expect to keep using the machine.

Thank you Paul_Tikkanen and Tk_srq .

You're very welcome.

I recommend that you enroll your PC for the extended W10 security updates if you have not done so already.

I enrolled the only PC I have left running on W10 and it was free of charge.
