My mouse touchpad stopped working last night. I've tried updating drivers (went through all the HP ones), uninstalling, disabling, enabling, hard resets, resetting my pc, safe mode, updating everything across the board. The mouse does work in BIOS and it passed the hardware tests. I don't have a random 'turn off touchpad' button, I wish it were that simple. Additional info: USB mice don't work, but they do show in devices and work in BIOS as well.

Any tips or tricks or anything like that would be much appreciated.

@MissAnde

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

  • Did you make any changes to the settings of your PC prior to the issue?
  • When was the last time it worked fine?

While you respond to that, let's try these steps:

Firstly, perform Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8.

Next step, BIOS default:

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer. Once it's done uninstall the Touchpad device,

Next, uninstall Touchpad device from device manager.

  1. Press Windows+X to open the menu, and choose Device Manager on it.
  2. In the device manager, expand category "Mice and other pointing devices".
  3. Under this category, right-click on your Synaptics Touchpad driver and click on Uninstall.
  4. You may be required to confirm the uninstallation. Check the box next to "Delete the driver software for this device" and click OK button.
  5. Restart your PC for the change to take effect. After restarting. Windows will attempt to reinstall the driver.
  6. Do not perform any manual upgrades to the driver until it does automatically

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thanks for responding. The solution didn't work.

My mouse stopped working Thursday night. I was actively using my laptop when the mouse, keyboard, volume toggles stopped working. The keyboard and volume toggles randomly started working the next morning (i.e. not after a restart or update or install). What's weird is that no mice work. I've tried plugging in a wireless mouse and a standard mouse, neither worked. However, the touchpad and mice work in BIOS and passed the hardware tests. I had been having battery and sleep trouble before I did a reset Thursday night as a nuclear effort, but those issues have been resolved.

@MissAnde

Thank you for posting back.

I appreciate your efforts to try and resolve the issue. I would suggest performing system factory reset will put the computer back to the original factory settings in this way all corrupted and outdated software will be removed.

While doing the recovery there is an option to backup your personal files. If you have not previously done one now is a good time.

Restoring Files that were Backed Up Using HP Recovery Manager (Windows )You can also contact HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help alleviate difficulties: www.hp.com/contacthp/

The HP Cloud Recovery Tool allows you to download recovery software to a USB drive. You can use the downloaded recovery image file in order to install the Windows operating system.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

I already did a factory reset. That's what I meant by doing a reset as a nuclear option. I'm pretty sure it solved my sleep and charging issues even if it didn't fix mt mouse.
