It’s becoming increasingly common that the PC doesn’t respond when I click the mouse. I can still move the cursor across the screen, but clicking does nothing. It’s not the mouse (I’ve tried other mice), and it’s not Windows either (fresh reinstall). The HP diagnostics show no issues. Does anyone have a solution?

Hi @Brt77

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I am sorry for the frustration you are facing with your PC not responding to mouse clicks even though the cursor moves. I understand how disruptive it feels when you’ve already tried different mice, reinstalled Windows, and even run diagnostics without finding any issues. I appreciate the effort you’ve put in to isolate the problem.

Here are steps you can try to restore proper mouse functionality:

Step 1: Check USB Ports and Connections

  • Plug the mouse into a different USB port on your PC.
  • If you are using a USB hub, connect the mouse directly to the PC instead.
  • For wireless mice, replace the batteries or re‑pair the dongle.

Step 2: Update Mouse Drivers

  • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  • Expand “Mice and other pointing devices.”
  • Right‑click your mouse driver and select “Update driver.”
  • Choose “Search automatically for drivers.”
  • You can also check the HP support page for your model:
    https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

Step 3: Disable Fast Startup

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
  • Click “Change settings that are currently unavailable.”
  • Uncheck “Turn on fast startup.”
  • Restart the PC and test the mouse.

Step 4: Test in Safe Mode

  • Press Windows + I > System > Recovery.
  • Under Advanced startup, click Restart now.
  • Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  • Select Safe Mode and test the mouse.
  • If it works in Safe Mode, a background driver or service may be interfering.

Step 5: Run Hardware Troubleshooter

  • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  • Run the “Hardware and Devices” troubleshooter.
  • Follow the prompts to detect and fix input issues.

Step 6: Check Touchpad Settings (if laptop)

  • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
  • Ensure touchpad gestures or palm rejection are not interfering with external mouse clicks.

Step 7: BIOS Update

  • Visit HP’s support page for your PC model.
  • Download and install the latest BIOS update.
  • This can resolve hardware communication issues.

These steps should help identify whether the issue is port‑related, driver‑related, or caused by background services.

I  followed all the steps and I think it is the bios update that solved the problem!

Hi @Brt77

That’s excellent news—it’s great to hear that the BIOS update resolved the mouse click issue. You showed real persistence by working through each step, and it paid off.

Updating the BIOS often clears out subtle hardware communication problems, so it makes sense that this was the key fix in your case.

Now that your system is stable again, a couple of tips to keep things smooth:

  • Check periodically for BIOS and driver updates on the HP support page for your model, especially after major Windows updates.
  • Keep Windows fully updated so drivers and firmware work in harmony.
  • Monitor performance—if you notice any new quirks, running HP App’s “Diagnose & Fix” tool can quickly confirm everything is in order.

If you need anything else, I'm all ears (or rather, all text). Just let me know!

You're awesome, and I'm honored to have been your go-to guide! 😊

Stay fantastic, and have an amazing day ahead!
