My laptop is so slow it is unusable. 15 minutes to start up is usual, outlook is permanently updating meaning I can use Office at all or look at my documents. It is worse than my first computer from 20 years ago with a P75 processor. WHat can be done? Will they take it back and fix it or replace it or burn it?

Thank you for joining HP Forums.
I'll be glad to help you 🙂
As I understand your PC is experiencing a slow performance,
No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:
Did you attempt to complete the scheduled tasks to stabilize the system performance?
Have you installed any Windows or HP updates?
(please install all available updates if you haven't)
I have a few steps to identify and resolve the issue:
Common causes of slow system performance:
- Not enough free disk space or disk errors.
- Applications that require a lot of system resources.
- Too many tasks running at the same time.
- Nonessential graphic features.
- Not enough memory.
- Overheating due to intensive graphic applications or dust in vents.
- Running multiple instances of anti-virus software.
Microsoft Fix it Solution to automatically improve system performance
To automatically improve system performance, click the Microsoft Fix it Solution:
Turning off nonessential graphical features to improve system performance
Graphical features and programs can use a lot of system resources.
Turning off these features can improve system performance.
This section explains how to adjust visual effects for best performance and how to disable Windows Aero.
Adjusting visual effects for best performance
The best way to do that is using the HP Guided Troubleshooter:
Click here to access it (simply select your description of the issue from the bottom of the screen to gain access to the next set of steps that should resolve your concern).
Let me know if those steps worked for you,
If they did, that's awesome!

thsnk you for you response. I have updated software, and deleted heavy programs that I can do without. THe links for removing aero, fixit etc do not work on windows 10 or do not exist.
It has been slow from day 1.
of 2 hard drives, C is 25% but D is 75% however it wont show what that consists of or give me a chance to deleta anything. I dont know what you mean by graphical features, or indeed how to turn them off.
any further advice gratefully received, or a remote intervention by a tech!
THanks
Sue

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉
I appreciate your time and efforts,
I'm curious to know if the Microsoft Fix it worked?
And also, did you perform a system restore or a recovery to reinstall the windows according to the guided troubleshooter I had mentioned earlier?
If you haven't yet, I recommend you create a backup of all personal data, run a hardware test on the Hard drive and once the tests pass, reinstall the windows using the steps mentioned on this link: Click here
Let me know how that pans out
I hope you have a good day ahead,
And Feel free to ask any other queries as well,
