My newly purchased Laptop (only received a few days ago) did a BIOS update upon starting and i wish to have this never happen again without my permission. I am worried that if i turn of my device it will happen again.
Any help at all would be very much appreciated, thank you.

Hi @MatthewSBE,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To prevent your HP laptop from automatically performing BIOS updates without your permission, you can follow these steps.
Disable Automatic BIOS Updates in HP Support Assistant:
Open HP Support Assistant:
- Type "HP Support Assistant" in the Windows search bar and open the application.
Access Settings:
- Click on the "Settings" (gear icon) usually located in the top right corner.
Update Settings:
- Navigate to the "Updates and tune-ups" tab.
Change Update Settings:
- Look for options related to "BIOS updates" or "Software updates".
- Uncheck or disable any options that allow automatic BIOS updates.
Disable Automatic Updates in Windows Update:
Open Windows Update Settings:
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to "Update & Security".
- Click on "Windows Update".
Advanced Options:
- Click on "Advanced options".
Pause Updates:
- You can pause updates for a specific period. This won't stop BIOS updates permanently but can give you time to manage updates manually.
BIOS Settings:
Some HP laptops allow you to manage BIOS update settings directly within the BIOS setup utility.
Enter BIOS Setup:
- Restart your laptop and press the BIOS key (usually F10, Esc, or Del) during startup.

Locate BIOS Update Settings:
- Look for an option related to BIOS updates in the BIOS setup utility. This might be under a tab like "Advanced" or "Security".
Disable Automatic Updates:
- If there's an option to disable automatic updates, set it to disabled or off.
Uninstall HP Firmware Update Tool:
Open Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R, type control, and press Enter.
Uninstall a Program:
- Go to "Programs" > "Programs and Features".
Find HP Firmware Update:
- Look for any HP firmware update tool or software and uninstall it.
Check HP BIOS Update Service:
Open Services:
- Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
Locate HP Services:
- Look for services related to HP updates, such as "HP BIOS Update" or "HP Software Framework".
Disable the Service:
- Right-click on the service, select "Properties", and set the startup type to "Disabled".
Manual Update Control:
Keep your laptop set to notify you of updates rather than automatically installing them. This way, you can review each update before it is installed.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
