I was downloading an update, had to leave and it said, I could stop download however, now I can't get my laptop to work at all.  How do I get it to open back up or did I fry my new laptop (HP 8 months olds).

Hi @Balloonlady4

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like your laptop might be stuck due to the interrupted update. Don't worry—there are steps you can take to try and fix this issue:

Force Restart:

  • Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the laptop shuts down completely.
  • Wait a few seconds, then press the power button again to restart.

Boot into Safe Mode:

  • Restart your laptop and press the F8 or Shift + F8 key repeatedly during startup (depending on your model).
  • If successful, you'll see a boot options menu. Select "Safe Mode."
  • Once in Safe Mode, uninstall the interrupted update by going to "Settings > Update & Security > View update history > Uninstall updates."

Perform a System Restore:

  • If Safe Mode doesn't work, restart the laptop and press the Esc key repeatedly during startup to access the Startup Menu.
  • Select "System Restore" and choose a restore point before the update was interrupted.

Use Windows Recovery Options:

  • If the laptop still doesn't boot, create a bootable Windows installation media using another computer and a USB drive.
  • Boot from the USB drive and select "Repair your computer" to access recovery options like Startup Repair or System Restore.

If this solution hits the spot, please come back and click "Accepted Solution" to help others find the answer. And if you'd like to say thanks, select "Yes" on the bottom left of the public post, as that would make our day! 😊

Take care, and have an amazing day!
