Suddenly my camera stopped working on video conferences. I have checked all the Microsoft system settings. I think it is the hardware.

@GALE68, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP notebook's camera shows a camera icon with a strike-through and doesn't work during video conferences, it could be due to a privacy shutter, disabled camera, or hardware/software conflict. Let's walk through some steps to troubleshoot this:

Check for a Physical Camera Shutter

Some HP notebooks have a physical privacy shutter or camera kill switch (usually near the camera or on the keyboard as a function key like F8 or F10).

  • Look for a slider near the webcam or press Fn + [Camera key] to toggle it.

Enable Camera in Windows Settings

Even if you've checked Microsoft settings, please confirm this:

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera
  • Ensure Camera access is enabled for both system and apps like Zoom, Teams, etc.

Check Device Manager

  • Press Windows + X → Select Device Manager
  • Expand Imaging Devices or Cameras
  • Right-click your camera → Enable device (if disabled)
  • If there's a yellow warning icon, try:
    • Right-click → Uninstall device
    • Restart your PC to reinstall the driver automatically

Update or Reinstall Camera Driver

  • Visit HP’s support site: Official HP® Support
  • Enter your notebook model
  • Download and install the latest Camera/Webcam driver under “Driver – Keyboard, Mouse, and Input Devices”

Use HP Hardware Diagnostics

To rule out hardware failure:

Additional Tips

  • Try using the Camera app in Windows to test if the webcam works outside conferencing apps.
  • If you're using external privacy software or antivirus, check if it's blocking camera access.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
