I have had it plugged in for half a day and it has not charged at all.  Have checked plug and tested with cell phone.  No issue.  It is a brand new laptop.

Hi @Merlynss,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how concerning it must be to see your brand-new HP laptop not charging at all, especially after leaving it plugged in for hours. You’ve already done the right thing by testing the outlet and charger with your phone, so let’s walk through what you can try next.

Step-by-Step HP Troubleshooting for Charging Issues

1. Check the Charging Port and Connector

  • Make sure the charger is fully inserted into the laptop’s charging port.
  • Inspect the charging port for dust, debris, or bent pins.
  • Try a different HP-compatible charger if available.

2. Look for Charging Indicators

  • Is the charging LED near the port on?
    • White or amber light = charging
    • No light = possible hardware issue

3. Perform a Hardware Reset

Sometimes, a static charge buildup can prevent charging.

Steps:

  1. Unplug the charger.
  2. Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  3. Plug the charger back in and try powering on.

4. Check Battery Status in BIOS

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Press Esc repeatedly while turning it on, then press F2 for diagnostics.
  3. Run the Battery Test to check battery health and charging status.

5. Update BIOS and Drivers

If the laptop powers on but doesn’t charge:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
