Hi there,

Ive just bought the new notebook and it’s running extremely slowly, it came with a load of apps preinstalled so I’ve removed nearly all and run the Windows Security ‘Fresh Start’ thing and still no luck.

It was bought new just a few days ago so I’m at a loss as to why it’s so slow, it’s a cheap laptop but surely you should be able to write an email with it?

Any help massively appreciated,

thanks,

J.

Not doing this to steal anyone's thunder ... but ... with a new Win10 PC, you're almost always going to experience a very slow PC for a while because Windows Upate (WU) is hogging your PC, searching for, downloading, and installing updates -- to bring your PC up to the most current version of Windows.

To find out what version and build of Win10 your PC is running, do the following:

1) enter "cmd" (without the quotes) into the search area and select the Command Prompt option
2) enter "winver" into the command window (again, without the quotes)
3) the most current Win10 is v1809 Build 17763.168

If your is older than that, most likely WU is hogging your PC trying to update it.

To disable WU temporarily, do the following:
1) Enter "services" in the search area (again, without the quotes)
2) When the window opens, scroll down until you see Windows Update
3) If it say Running under status, that indicates that WU is running
4) To change that, double-click on that task, select Stop under the Service status, and then Apply
5) That should stop WU -- and you should see an immediate improvement in performance

WU will restart itself automatically later on, so you basically have no choice thathan to bear with it until it finishes.

Hi,

thankou so much for taking the time to reply!

I did as outlined, helped speed things up slightly but after a day it’s back to normal, ( I switched windows update back on over night and continue to do so but it’s still slow/ freezing)

is there anything else I could try?

thanks so much in advance,

jade.

First off, the preinstalled HP apps are not going to slow it appreciably, as they are most utilities that take up very little space and use little processing power.

Second, if disabling Window Update didn't speed it up A LOT, there is something else at play.

Third, if this was mine, and I was able to return it for a full refund, I would do that -- because you are right, even a low-end laptop should be OK to use for what you want without problems.
