@MarcLock I'm writing on behalf of my colleague @A4Apollo as the tech is out of the office for the day,
I'm afraid this device doesn't have an LED or notification by design and the same cannot be upgraded in a way that's supported by HP, you may make the suggested changes from the previous at your own discretion,
ensure you back up all personal data before attempting registry changes that said, I have sent your feedback to the appropriate team to implement the idea, however, I'm not sure if that would be done until the new release of computers and I don't have a timeframe on it either.
I hope that answers your query,

Hey There! @MarcLock,
As there is no indicator to check if num lock key is enabled on the PC. Please try the steps recommended below to enable/disable num lock key.
Control Panel > icon view > Ease of Access Center > Make the keyboard easier to use
CHECK Turn on Toggle Keys (to hear tone)
and, Optional:
CHECK Turn on Toggle Keys by holding down the NUM LOCK key for 5 seconds
OK to save changes
If you have issues enabling num lock, please try the steps recommended below.
Disable Fast Startup, to enable Num Lock
Press Win + X and click on Control Panel
Click on Power Plan
Now click on Choose what the power buttons do on the left side panel
Now select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on fast startup (recommended)
Enable Num Lock on startup using registry tweak
The second method is to alter the registry settings and so, Windows 10/8/7 users can try this. I would strongly recommend taking a backup of the registry and create a system restore point first. Having done that, follow these steps:
Press Win + R and type in Regedit
Navigate to registry key HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard
Right-click on the “InitialKeyboardIndicators”, select Modify and change Value data to 2.
Exit Registry.
Hope this answers your query!
Have a wonderful day ahead! 🙂

It's mostly an visual indicator I'm looking for. My Notebook 17 - 044 n provides already a sound by changing the Num Lock or Shift Lock but only the shift Lock has a led indicator. I saw on a new version of HP Notebooks that on the screen a symbol appears when using the Num Lock or Shift Lock key. that would be interestingt if I could introduce this on my notbook.

Ya, a bit of a stumble on HP's part design wise. Not like an indicator of some sort hasn't been on keyboards for some decades...
But, a bit of a "kluge" if you have a Logitech rodent (perhaps other brands as well) with it's options menu in the Taskbar (or in the hidden icons area), is to just right click it's icon. If the Num Lock, is on it will state so. Otherwise it's not mentioned.
