whta is the tempreture level for my cpu to go critical cause ive noticed my cpu tempreture reads high even though my laptop is not very hot but just warm when playing games and sometimes goes 90 to 100 when play 2k25 nba on normal graphic settings with fps cap to 60. so i want to know is this how the laptop was made or there is something wrong i should check.
and also ive noticed that mu cpu speed doesnt drop since i installed new window it has been range from 3.14 to 3.20 at ideal stage i mean while im not doing anything the utilities percentage is 4%

Hi @Tyriceben,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding PC overheating!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Your OMEN 15 (2021) laptop running at high temperatures even when idle could be due to several factors, especially after reinstalling Windows. Here’s how to check if it’s normal or if you need to take action:
Normal CPU Temperature Ranges
For gaming laptops like the OMEN 15:
- Idle temperature: 40-55°C
- Normal load (web browsing, light tasks): 55-75°C
- Heavy gaming or rendering: 80-95°C
- Critical shutdown temperature: 100-105°C (depends on CPU model)
If your CPU is constantly hitting 90-100°C during normal gaming, that’s high but not uncommon for gaming laptops. However, it can shorten your laptop's lifespan if sustained for too long.
Why Your CPU Speed Isn't Dropping at Idle
If your CPU stays at 3.14 - 3.20 GHz while idle and CPU usage is just 4%, there could be reasons for this:
- Windows High-Performance Mode (keeps CPU at max speed)
- Background processes or services using CPU
- Missing or incorrect power management drivers after reinstalling Windows
- BIOS settings affecting CPU behavior
Fixing High Idle Clock Speeds
Check Power Plan Settings
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options
- Select Balanced Mode (instead of High Performance)
- Click Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings
- Expand Processor Power Management > Minimum Processor State
- Set on battery to 5%
- Set plugged in to 10-15%
- Restart your laptop.

Check Task Manager for Background Apps
- Right-click Taskbar > Open Task Manager
- Go to Processes tab and check for high CPU usage apps.
- If "Windows Modules Installer" or "Antimalware Service Executable" is using high CPU, wait for it to finish or restart your PC.
Update Your BIOS & Chipset Drivers
If Windows reinstall messed with power management, try:
- Updating BIOS from HP Support
- Installing the latest AMD/Intel chipset drivers from HP or motherboard website
Fixing High Gaming Temperatures (90-100°C)
Use OMEN Gaming Hub for Fan Control
- Open OMEN Gaming Hub
- Go to Performance Control
- Set to Performance Mode or Max Fan Mode
- This will force fans to run at higher speeds.
Repaste Thermal Paste (If Laptop Is Old)
If your laptop is 2+ years old, thermal paste might be dried out. Consider reapplying high-quality thermal paste (Arctic MX-6, Thermal Grizzly, etc.).
C. Undervolt Your CPU (Safe Option)
You can undervolt your CPU using ThrottleStop or Intel XTU (if available).
- Reducing voltage by -50mV to -100mV can lower temps by 5-15°C without performance loss.
Clean Dust from Cooling System
Dust buildup in fans can reduce cooling efficiency:
- Turn off laptop & unplug it
- Use compressed air to blow out dust from vents
- If comfortable, open back cover and clean heatsinks and fans manually
- Idle CPU should drop to ~1.0 GHz, check power settings if it stays high.
- Gaming temps of 90-100°C are high but normal for some gaming laptops
- Use max fan mode, undervolt CPU, repaste if necessary
- Ensure BIOS & chipset drivers are installed properly
