Hi @JimB24,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
If OneDrive is using too much space on your HP Laptop PC 15-dw3000 (1A3Y0AV), it's likely that files are being stored both locally on your hard drive and in the cloud. Here are several ways to free up space:
1. Check OneDrive Sync Settings (Files On-Demand)
OneDrive has a feature called Files On-Demand, which allows you to keep files in the cloud but access them when needed without taking up space locally.
- Step 1: Right-click the OneDrive icon in the system tray (bottom-right corner) and select Settings.
- Step 2: Go to the Settings tab and make sure Files On-Demand is enabled.
- Step 3: Once enabled, open your OneDrive folder and right-click on files or folders you don’t need locally. Choose Free up space—this will remove the local copy while keeping it accessible in the cloud.
2. Selective Sync
You can choose which folders to sync to your device, limiting what’s stored on your local hard drive.
- Step 1: Right-click the OneDrive icon in the system tray and select Settings.
- Step 2: Go to the Account tab and click on Choose folders.
- Step 3: Uncheck the folders you don’t want to sync to your device.
- Step 4: Click OK. This will remove those folders from your local storage but keep them in the cloud.
3. Move Large Files to Cloud Only
If you have large files that don’t need to be accessed regularly, consider moving them to OneDrive and removing the local copies.
- Step 1: Move large files to your OneDrive folder.
- Step 2: Wait for them to sync.
- Step 3: Right-click on the files and select Free up space to remove the local copy.
4. Clear OneDrive Cache
If your OneDrive cache has built up over time, it can take up unnecessary space.
- Step 1: Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.
- Step 2: Type %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset and press Enter.
- Step 3: This will reset OneDrive’s cache and potentially free up space.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @JimB24 ,
Please find the remaining steps below.
6. Check for Duplicate Files
Sometimes files may be duplicated between your local drive and OneDrive. Manually check for any duplicate files that can be removed or uploaded to OneDrive and then deleted locally.
7. Consider External Storage
If you consistently need more storage than your laptop can provide, consider using an external hard drive or USB storage to move large files off your internal drive while keeping them accessible.
8. Upgrade Storage
If you're regularly running out of space, you may want to upgrade your laptop's hard drive to a larger capacity SSD if that's feasible for your model.
- Enable Files On-Demand to keep files in the cloud.
- Use Selective Sync to only sync essential folders locally.
- Right-click on files and choose Free up space to remove local copies.
- Enable Storage Sense to help manage OneDrive and free space automatically.
These steps should help free up space on your HP Laptop by reducing the amount of OneDrive content stored locally while keeping it accessible in the cloud.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
