Pavillion Laptop purchased at Costco less than 1 year ago heated up to extreme temperature while plugged in and closed.

Fortunately it was leaning against the table leg as I usually keep it, so nothing went on fire. It was there for about 7 hours and  then I noticed a buzzing sound. I opened it up and the computer had shut down (Black Screen), I turned it off and on and it rebooted and began to cool down over the next 5 or 6 minutes. It seems OK now. What happened? Is there any danger?

Thanks !

Hi @allure45 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Pavilion Laptop experienced overheating, which can happen for a few reasons:

  • Ventilation Blockage: If the laptop was leaning against a surface like a table leg, it may have blocked the air vents, restricting airflow and causing heat to build up.
  • Internal Dust: Dust accumulation inside the laptop can block fans and vents, leading to inadequate cooling.
  • Battery Issues: Sometimes, overheating can be related to battery problems, especially if the battery is swelling or failing.
  • High Resource Usage: If the laptop was running demanding applications while charging, this could contribute to overheating.
  • Software or Driver Issues: In some cases, software or driver malfunctions can cause excessive CPU usage, resulting in overheating.

  • Check Airflow: Ensure that the laptop has proper ventilation when in use, especially when charging. Avoid using it on soft surfaces like beds or couches.
  • Clean the Vents: If you feel comfortable, open the laptop to clean any dust from the vents and fans. Otherwise, consider professional cleaning.
  • Monitor Temperature: Use software to monitor the CPU and GPU temperatures. If they consistently run high, you may have a hardware issue that needs addressing.
  • Update Drivers: Make sure all drivers and the BIOS are up to date, as updates can improve power management and cooling efficiency.
