Hi  @naveen457

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand how this must feel, especially when the numeric keypad has not functioned correctly since the day you purchased the laptop, don’t worry let me check and help you with this.

To better assist you, could you kindly confirm the below details :

  • Does the issue occur in all applications (Notepad, Excel, browser, etc.)?
  • When you press the affected keys, do they always act as arrow/navigation keys?
  • Does pressing the Num Lock key change the behaviour at all?
  • Have you noticed any on-screen Num Lock indicator when toggling the key?

In the meantime, kindly try the below steps and confirm :

Step 1: Enable/Disable Num Lock

  1. Locate the Num Lock (NumLK) key on the keyboard.
  2. Press it once and test the numeric keypad.
  3. If available, try Fn + Num Lock.

Step 2:  Run HP Hardware Diagnostics (Link for steps - click here )

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Power it on and repeatedly tap F2.
  3. Select Component Tests > Keyboard.
  4. Run the keyboard test and note any error messages.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your response.

I have already performed all the checks and troubleshooting steps mentioned above, including the Num Lock/Fn + Num Lock tests and the HP Hardware Diagnostics keyboard test.

Here is what I observed:

- When Num Lock is OFF, the navigation keys work normally.

- When Num Lock is ON, the numeric keypad does not enter numbers, and the affected keys do not behave as expected.

- The issue occurs across applications such as Notepad, Excel, browsers, and other Windows applications.

- However, I don't believe this is a hardware issue because I have a dual-boot Ubuntu setup, and the numeric keypad works perfectly fine in Ubuntu.

- I can also enter numbers using the keypad during the Windows login screen.

- After logging in, I can sometimes enter numbers using the keypad in certain password prompts, such as when Chrome asks for a password for autofill.

- But once I am inside Windows, the numeric keypad does not work correctly in applications such as Notepad, Excel, or on websites.

This makes me suspect that the issue is related to Windows/application-level keyboard handling, a Windows service/setting, or a driver/software conflict, rather than a physical keyboard hardware problem.

I have already completed the hardware checks mentioned in your instructions. Could you please help me investigate the Windows-side issue, particularly why Num Lock works at the login screen and in some password prompts but not normally after logging into Windows?

Please let me know if there are any additional Windows-specific diagnostics or settings I should check.

Hi @naveen457,

Thank you for the detailed update. I appreciate the  information you've provided.

Based on your observations, I agree that this does not appear to be a hardware-related issue since:

The numeric keypad functions correctly in Ubuntu. The keypad works at the Windows sign-in screen and you are able to use the numeric keypad in certain password prompts within Windows.

The issue is isolated to the Windows user session and specific applications after login.

This  suggests that the keyboard hardware is working as designed and that the behaviour may be related to a Windows setting, keyboard accessibility feature, driver conflict, or third-party software interfering with keypad input.

To help isolate the cause further, kindly try the below Windows-specific checks:

 1: Test in Safe Mode

  1. Boot Windows into Safe Mode.
  2. Open Notepad and test the numeric keypad with Num Lock enabled.
  3. Let us know whether the issue persists in Safe Mode.

2: Check Ease of Access Keyboard Settings

  1. Go to Settings -Accessibility -Keyboard.
  2. Ensure that Mouse Keys, Sticky Keys, and Filter Keys are turned Off.
  3. Restart the system and test again.

 3: Reinstall Keyboard Drivers

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Keyboards.
  3. Right-click the keyboard device and select Uninstall device.
  4. Restart the notebook and allow Windows to reinstall the driver automatically.

Additionally, could you kindly let us know:

  • Which version/build of Windows are you currently running?
  • Does the issue occur when using a newly created local Windows user account?

    I hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply, I have tried all 3 ways and examined properly still no use even with safe mode but worked properly on guest login account but not working on administrator account.

Hi @naveen457,

Thank you for performing all the  steps and sharing the results.

Since the numeric keypad works correctly in Ubuntu, at the Windows sign-in screen, and on a Guest account, this indicates that the keyboard hardware is working normally. The issue appears to be related to your Administrator user profile in Windows.

Kindly try the below steps and confirm :

1: Test with a New Administrator Account

  1. Go to Settings -Accounts - Other Users.
  2. Create a new local user account.
  3. Change the account type to Administrator.
  4. Sign in to the new account and test the numeric keypad.

2: If the Keypad Works in the New Account

This confirms that your current Administrator profile has a Windows configuration or profile corruption issue.

You can then:

  • Move your personal files to the new account and continue using it, or
  • Repair/reset the affected Windows profile.

Based on the information provided from your end, this does not appear to be a hardware failure. The most likely cause is a user profile setting affecting the Administrator account.

Kindly let us know the results after testing with a new Administrator account

I hope this helps.
