HP 246 G6 Notebook PC
Linux

A while ago, I tried installing several Linux distributions on my laptop (specifically Elementary OS and Debian) and encountered several problems:
- The first was that the installation would crash several times during installation. I booted from the USB drive (I tested with more than one) several times, and the result was the same 90% of the time: a crash for no reason, even after trying several different configurations.
- The second was that, even when I managed to complete the installation (which was rare), the system would always crash, and some drivers, like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, wouldn't load properly.

I'd like to know if this is a general problem with the laptop (I've read in a few places about this incompatibility with Linux versions), and I'd also like to know if there's a specific distribution that I wouldn't have any problems installing.

Hello Eder,
Good day. Thank you for reaching out to the Hp community. I would be delighted to assist you. Superb description and terrific troubleshooting. Kudos to you for that.

If you are experiencing issues with your HP 246 G6 Notebook PC running a Linux operating system, here are some general tips and steps that might help resolve common problems:

Common Issues and Solutions

  1. Driver Compatibility:

    • Ensure that all necessary drivers are installed and updated. Some hardware components, like Wi-Fi adapters and graphic cards, might require specific drivers.
    • Use the lspci command to list all attached devices and verify driver installation.
  2. BIOS Update:

    • An outdated BIOS may cause compatibility issues with Linux distributions. Check for available BIOS updates on the HP Drivers and Software page.
  3. Hardware Compatibility:

    • Check the Linux Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) to ensure that your hardware is fully supported by your chosen distribution.
  4. Power Management Issues:

    • If you face battery or power management issues, try changing the power manager settings or updating the tlp or laptop-mode-tools to improve battery life and laptop cooling.
  5. Kernel Update:

    • Sometimes updating the Linux kernel resolves hardware compatibility issues. Use your distribution's package manager for safe kernel updates.
