Hello,
I have a recurring problem with my HP Rechargeable Tilt Pen MPP 2.0. From time to time, especially when I am using the Goodnotes app (which I use almost all the time), the pen writes even when it is not touching the screen directly (it writes when it is about 5 mm away from the screen). This makes it almost impossible for me to write properly. But it's not just the Goodnotes app that's buggy, because if I go to the home screen, I can “click” on an app without even touching the screen (as if I had left-clicked my mouse while the pen is not in contact with the screen).
Furthermore, when I go to the HP app --> MyPen --> touch stylus for status --> hold for 3 seconds, it tells me that the battery status is unavailable.
Could I have a solution for these two problems? The first one is particularly annoying if I'm taking notes in class and the bug appears because I can no longer write properly. The second is a little less serious because I just don't know how much battery my pen has left, so I just recharge it more often to avoid any problems.

Also, I can't find de serial number of my hp pen MPP2.0, where can I find it?

I am on HP Envy x360 14 inch 2-in-1 Laptop PC 14-fc0000 (8Z8M0AV).

I hope you can help me and thank you in advance for your time!

Have a nice day!

Hi @Theogio2004

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

To resolve your HP Rechargeable Tilt Pen MPP 2.0 writing without contact and battery status issues, try resetting the pen, updating drivers, and adjusting stylus sensitivity.

The serial number is typically etched near the USB-C charging port or printed on the original packaging.

Step-by-step actions to fix stylus writing without contact

1. Reset the pen and re-pair it

  1. Disconnect the pen from Bluetooth (if paired).
  2. Press and hold the top button for 10 seconds to reset.
  3. Reconnect the pen via Bluetooth if your model supports it.
  4. Restart your laptop and test in HP App > MyPen.

This clears any residual pairing or pressure calibration issues.

2. Update touch and pen drivers

These updates improve stylus detection and pressure handling.

3. Adjust pen pressure and palm rejection

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink.
  2. Set Ignore touch input when using my pen to On.
  3. If available, adjust Pen pressure sensitivity to medium or low.

This reduces unintended activation when hovering near the screen.

4. Test in alternate apps

Try using Microsoft OneNote or Whiteboard to confirm if the issue is app-specific.

If the pen behaves normally in other apps, the issue may be tied to Goodnotes’ compatibility layer.

Battery status unavailable – what to do

  • Ensure the pen is fully charged using a USB-C cable and a direct wall outlet.
  • Open HP App > MyPen and hold the stylus icon for 3 seconds again.
  • If status remains unavailable, it may be due to firmware or app limitations.

Charging the pen regularly is a good workaround until status reporting stabilizes.

Locating the serial number on HP Tilt Pen MPP 2.0

  • Look near the USB-C charging port: The serial number may be etched in small print.
  • Check the original packaging or box label.
  • If unavailable, you can register the pen using your laptop’s serial number for support purposes.

Thank you for your answer @Hawks_Eye.
I'm sorry but I have some problems concerning your instructions. Firstly, my pen doesn't seem to be connected by bluetooth, it doesn't appear on the bluetooth's setting page (so when a solution require to go on bluetooth settings, I can't do it). About the part that it is possible that goodnotes is the problem, I don't think so because I m using one part of my screen with goodnotes and the other one with chrome and when the problem appears on goodnotes it becomes the same with chrome. Even if I close goodnotes, my home screen is having the same problem. Moreover, the link you send me to update the pen is not available, it tells me that the product has been retired (even if it's pretty new).

So would it be possible to have another way to solve this problem?

P.S. I had this problem this morning again, I shut down the computer and turned it on and the pen was working correctly again (I tried to restart it with the restart button but it did not work).

Thank you for your help and have a nice day!

You are very welcome @Theogio2004

Thank you for your thoughtful follow-up. You’ve done everything right by observing the issue across multiple apps and confirming that it’s not Bluetooth-based.

Your HP Rechargeable Tilt Pen MPP 2.0 is likely experiencing intermittent firmware or digitizer calibration issues—not Bluetooth-related—causing it to register input while hovering. Since restarting the laptop temporarily resolves it, we’ll focus on stabilizing the pen’s behavior through system-level resets and driver alignment.

Let’s walk through a refined recovery path tailored to your HP Envy x360 14-fc0000 and MPP 2.0 pen.

Step-by-step actions to stabilize pen input and restore battery status

1. Perform a full embedded controller reset

This clears low-level power states that may affect the digitizer.

  1. Power off the laptop completely.
  2. Disconnect the charger and all peripherals.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the charger only.
  5. Power on the laptop and test the pen.

This helps reset the touchscreen controller and pen interface.

2. Update key drivers manually

Even if HP’s site shows the product as retired, your laptop’s drivers remain active.

  • Visit: HP Envy x360 14-fc0000 Drivers
  • Download and install:
    • Intel Integrated Sensor Hub Driver
    • Intel Graphics Driver
    • Intel Serial IO Driver
    • HP Pen Control App (if listed)

These updates improve stylus detection, pressure calibration, and palm rejection.

3. Disable hover input sensitivity

Windows may misinterpret hover distance as active input.

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Pen & Windows Ink.
  2. Enable Ignore touch input when using my pen.
  3. If available, set Pen pressure sensitivity to low.
  4. Restart the laptop.

This reduces false activation when the pen is near but not touching the screen.

4. Check for firmware updates via HP App

  1. Open the HP App.
  2. Go to My Device > Updates.
  3. Check for any firmware updates related to touch or pen input.

Firmware updates may resolve digitizer misbehavior and improve battery reporting.

5. Battery status workaround

If battery status remains unavailable:

  • Charge the pen fully using a direct USB-C wall outlet.
  • Avoid charging via laptop or hub.
  • Use the pen until it shows signs of low response, then recharge.

The battery status may be unsupported in current firmware but charging behavior remains reliable.

Let me know how the pen responds after these steps. If the issue returns, we can test with a clean boot or isolate the digitizer layer further. You’ve done everything right by staying observant—I’ll be here to guide you further if needed.

Thanks for your return. I installed the programms you told me to. I will see if it doesn't bug anymore. Concerning the HP pen, I have on the box of the product the number : 3J122AA#ABB but I can't use it to save the pen into my account's products. And all the things you told me to update are updated. I will see if it works like that and come back to you if it fails again. Thanks for your help and have a nice week!

You are Welcome @Theogio2004

I appreciate the update, and it’s great to hear you’ve already installed the programs and checked for updates—that’s a thorough approach. The number you see on the box, 3J122AA#ABB, is the product part number, which identifies the specific model and regional variant of your HP Rechargeable Tilt Pen MPP 2.0.

That number is useful for finding drivers, manuals, and accessories, but it usually can’t be registered directly in your HP account the way a laptop or printer serial number can. Pens and accessories often don’t appear in the “My Products” section because they don’t have unique serials tied to warranty tracking.

If you’d like to keep it linked for your own records, you can:

  • Save the part number in your HP account notes or alongside your registered laptop, so you know which pen belongs to which device.
  • Use the HP App to check compatibility and updates for your laptop model—the pen will work as long as the laptop supports Microsoft Pen Protocol (MPP) 2.0.

You’ve already done the right steps by updating everything, so now it’s just a matter of monitoring how the pen behaves. If it continues to work smoothly, you’re all set. If it misbehaves again, we can go deeper into driver resets or firmware checks.

Take care, and have an incredible day ahead!
