HP Probook 450 G5
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all,

Recently got a Probook 450 G5 with Windows 10 Home 64bit edition installed.

For some reason, the fingerprint reader is not being detected. I've tried various different drivers but absolutely no biometric devices are being shown in device manager.

I have enabled biometric devices through local group policy but this has still not helped.

In device manager, under Human Input Devices I have a 'Synaptics HID Device' with hardware ID; VEN_SYN&DEV_3063&Col04 This seems to be linked to the l2C HID Device because if this is removed, the synaptics HID device is also removed.

I've tried all the drivers on the HP support site but none of them seem to detect is as a Biometric device! Because of this, the HP Client security manager fails to recognise any fingerprint readers.

Has anybody out there had the same issue and been able to resolve it? I feel like i've tried so much already, im begining to wonder if this laptop even has a fingerprint reader or if its just there for show!

Thanks

The fingerprint reader - available on select models - is located to the lower right of the keyboard.

If the hardware is installed, the reader will (likely) look like a little glass bar as opposed to a plain cover over the slot.

I can offer the following, none of which are "guaranteed" and any of which might help:

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Enable the fingerprint reader in the BIOS

  • Shut down the notebook - wait a couple of seconds to ensure the computer is in an "off" state
  • Power up the computer, immediately and repeatedly clicking the ESC key until the computer "beeps" and the Startup Menu shows on the screen
  • Select the BIOS (F10)
  • Select Advanced > Built-In Device Options
  • Examine the entries in the list...scroll down to see the "whole list"
  • If found, verify / check the box next to the  "Fingerprint Device"
  • Select tab Main
  • Select Save Changes and Exit

OR

  • Select Ignore Changes and Exit (if nothing was changed or if you fear you made a mistake)
  • Verify your decision (if asked) and Exit

If the "Fingerprint Device" setting is not available in the BIOS,

The device hardware does not exist (or is non-functional / broken / not connected)

OR

The device is always enabled

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

  • Check / Run Windows Updates
  • Restart the computer if any updates are applied

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Open your computer Software and Driver Support Website

Expand the entire list > Click the + sign inside the boxes

Look for at least those drivers dated this year (2018 at this writing)

Install any drivers needing to be updated

Hint:  Install the Chipset first, if it is on the list of updates to be applied

If you have not done so, and if the BIOS needs to be updated:

Install the BIOS update -- do this one last, by itself, AND after you have checked / run Windows Updates (and restarted the computer).

NOTE:  It is strongly recommended that before you update the BIOS, you back up your most critical files / data to the cloud, to a USB drive, "somewhere" you can access the data in the event that the computer becomes unavailable.

OR

Use the business class SDM software to manage / update your HP software and updates.

Business class computers support a robust, comprehensive software tool for updating and managing HP Software and Drivers:  Softpaq Download Manager (SDM)

 HP SoftPaq Download Manager (SDM)

Windows (Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10)

sp87158.exe

How-to and Instructions:

HP Notebook PCs - Using HP SoftPaq Download Manager

Caveat:  It is recommended that you update the BIOS last and by itself.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

If you have not done so, set / verify your sign-in options > Assign a PIN

Windows key > Settings > Account > Sign-in Options > PIN number

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Check for any difference...

Hi,

Thanks very much for your reply.

I was under the impression all of the 450 G5's came with a fingerprint reader. After reading your comment I'm going to assume that this one doesnt (please see pic!) it did look a little bit too plasticty to be a fingerprint reader but i just assumed the tech had moved on a lot in the recent years!
