HP ENVY Notebook - 17-k206na
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I had never considered updating my drivers in the past until I came across an issue with a certain application where the microphone was not working.

My friend also told me how important it was to keep them updated so I went to the HP support website to check was drivers could be updated and I started to install them. My issue with the microphone did appear to be fixed.

However, ever since I updated some of the drivers, my laptop has been running at a high CPU usage for some unknown reason. I checked my running processes and it appeared that a process under the name 'System' was the reason for my high CPU usage.

I have tried to look up how to fix this issue, but I mostly came across people telling me that the reason was the outdated drivers. However, I had just updated them.

I would be very grateful if someone has had a similar situation and resolved it, or if anyone knows how to fix this issue.

Thank you

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP ENVY Notebook - 17-k206na. I read that after updating the drivers there is a message that the CPU usage is high. You have checked that a process by the name of the system is causing the CPU usage to be at 100%. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

I did some research and found that the system process might be one of the critical processes and ending this process could lead to other complications.

I would like to know the following information to assist you better:

  • Is the laptop's performance slow while working in Windows?

Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Open ‘Device manager’ and ‘Scan for hardware changes’.

Adjust your Windows 10 for the best performance:

  • Right click on “Computer” icon and select “Properties”
  • Select “Advanced System settings”
  • Go to the “System properties”
  • Select “Settings”
  • Choose “Adjust for best performance” and “Apply”.
  • Click “OK” and Restart your computer.

Disable startup programs:

  • Hit Win Key + R
  • Type ‘msconfig’ and press enter
  • The Task manager window will open. Click on the “Startup” tab and you will see a list of programs that run at startup.
  • Right click on the applications that you don’t want to run at startup and select “Disable”.

Defragment Hard Drive**bleep** Win Key + R:

  • Hit Win Key + R
  • Type “dfrgui” and press enter
  • In the new window click on the hard drives you want to defragment (Prefer the drive in which Windows is installed)
  • Click “Optimize” and follow the instructions on the screen to finish the defragment process.
  • Restart your computer.

If the issue still persists and the laptop's performance is slow then I suggest you to follow the steps from the HP troubleshooter guide. These steps help in improving the laptop's performance.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Let me know how it goes. Cheers!
