HP Support Assistant used to be good, but I'm now seeing this same issue.

When I start it and try to get Updates, it pops up the Restart Computer dialog.

Selecting Restart Now does nothing.

I've tried re-installing the Assistant.

I've restarted the computer.

I've checked for updates via Windows settings.

Nothing.

Assistant is useless, and I hope HP doesn't send out a security update I can no longer receive.

Hi @AdamDVA,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear that HP Support Assistant will not restart computer.

Fixes for HP Support Assistant Restart Issue:

Manual restart: Instead of clicking “Restart Now,” restart your PC manually via the Windows Start menu → Power → Restart. This often completes the update process.

Update HP Support Assistant: Download the latest version directly from HP Support Assistant | HP® Support. Older builds have this bug.

Check Windows Updates: Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update. Install all pending updates. Incomplete Windows updates can block HP Support Assistant.

Run in Safe Mode: Boot into Safe Mode and try launching HP Support Assistant. This reduces conflicts with background processes.

Uninstall and reinstall: Fully remove HP Support Assistant, reboot, then reinstall the newest version. This clears corrupted settings.

Enable Software Update settings: Inside HP Support Assistant → Settings → Software Update, make sure automatic updates are enabled. Sometimes the restart prompt loops because updates aren’t scheduled properly.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
