My 15-fd0123dx keyboard wasn’t working, and I made the mistake of restoring the laptop. The keyboard works now, but I lost the preinstalled MS Office 2024. I can’t find HP Recovery Manager to restore it, and when I tried downloading the HP Cloud Recovery Tool, I couldn’t find the right category, so it didn’t work. Spent too much time!

Hi @Aya325
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thank you for your patience and for already trying to resolve the keyboard issue. I’m truly sorry to hear that restoring your laptop caused Microsoft Office 2024 to disappear—let’s work together to bring it back.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help recover your preinstalled Office 2024 on your HP 15-fd0123dx running Windows 11:
Step 1: Check for a Digital License
Your HP laptop likely came with a digital license for Office 2024 tied to your Microsoft account or embedded in the system firmware.
- Sign in to your Microsoft account at office.com using the same email you may have used when first activating Office.
- Once signed in, click on “My Microsoft Account” and go to “Services & Subscriptions.”
- Look for Microsoft Office Home 2024 or similar in the list. If it appears, you can download and install Office directly from there.
Step 2: Use the Office Activation Troubleshooter
If Office is installed but not activated:
- Press Windows + S, type “Word” or “Excel”, and open the app.
- If prompted to activate, sign in with your Microsoft account.
- If activation fails, go to Settings > System > Activation, and check if Windows is activated. If not, activate Windows first.
- Then, open any Office app again and try activation.
Step 3: Check for OEM Office Installer
Sometimes, the Office installer remains in the system even after a reset:
- Open File Explorer and go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office or C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office.
- If you see an OfficeSetup.exe or similar file, double-click it to reinstall Office.
- Follow the on-screen prompts and sign in with your Microsoft account when asked.
Step 4: Use HP Cloud Recovery
If Office isn’t listed in your Microsoft account and you couldn’t find the correct category in the HP Cloud Recovery Tool:
- Open the tool again and enter your product ID manually (you can find it by pressing Windows + R, typing msinfo32, and checking System SKU).
- Select “Windows Recovery Environment” and proceed with the download.
- During the recovery process, ensure you select the option that includes preinstalled software.
- After recovery, check if Office is restored. If not, proceed to the next step.
Step 5: Contact Microsoft Support for License Rebinding
If none of the above steps restore Office:
- Gather your proof of purchase for the laptop.
- Visit support.microsoft.com and start a chat with a Microsoft agent.
- Explain that your HP laptop came with preinstalled Office 2024 and you lost it after a system restore.
- Provide your Microsoft account email and device serial number if asked.
They can help verify your entitlement and assist in reactivating Office.
- If you remember seeing a product key card in the box or email from HP or the retailer, keep it handy—it can speed up the process.
You’ve done a lot already, and I appreciate your persistence. Let’s keep going—your Office suite is likely recoverable with these steps.

Hi Hawks_Eye,
Thanks so much for your great help, and sorry for the late reply. I followed your detailed instructions but wasn’t successful. I also contacted Microsoft for help, but that didn’t work either. I later discovered that my Office was installed by a third party, not HP, since I bought the laptop from Amazon. Fortunately, the seller was very helpful, provided a product key and instructions, and I was finally able to recover Office yesterday. I would thank you again for your warm and professional help!

Hi @Aya325
You are very welcome!
I’m really glad to hear you were able to get Office back up and running! That must have been a relief after all the troubleshooting and back-and-forth. It makes sense now why the recovery steps didn’t line up—since the installation came from a third party, the licensing path was different than what HP or Microsoft would normally provide. Great job following through with the seller and getting the product key sorted out.
Thank you for your kind words—I appreciate you taking the time to share the outcome. It’s always satisfying to know the effort helped you move closer to a solution, even if the final fix came from another angle.
Since you now have Office restored, I’d suggest keeping the product key and instructions safely backed up (maybe in a secure password manager or encrypted file). That way, if you ever need to reinstall, you won’t have to repeat the chase.
You're awesome, and I'm honored to have been your go-to guide! 😊
Stay fantastic, and have an amazing day ahead!
