Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

Yes, that is correct, when the pc is restarted & if it's turned on during the scheduled time frame as suggested by the previous tech,

The updates should install accordingly.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand you need help improving storage space,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Have you removed unnecessary programs and capabilities that eat up most of your storage space?

Did you know that the updates have to be installed one way or the other to have your PC running at its optimal performance?

That said, Follow the below steps to resolve storage issues by disabling capabilities that take up more space than usual:

  • Run the Disk Cleanup tool, and then at the bottom of the window that pops up, click on "Clean up system files". Check everything, hit OK, and let it run. You will free up several GB for sure.

  • Another thing to do is disable hibernate file. Run CMD as Administrator, and type the following:

  • powercfg hibernate off

  • Enjoy your extra space!

If you have any Low Disk Space Errors: Click here  to resolve them,

Let me know if those steps worked for you,

If they did, that's awesome!

Give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

That'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck

My problem is that I have a satlite internet provider. I have a 10gb plan. When updates occur it uses a large amount of my available data. If my updates run between Midnight and 0500 hours my data is not effected. Hope this helps. Thank you for your reply it will help.

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time, effort and the clarification,

That said, I must let you know that Windows 10 has disabled options to rescheduling the automatic updates unlike its predecessor such as WinXP, Win7, etc...however, considering your dilemma, I've dug in and found an alternative that should help your cause:

If your Windows 10 version ships with Group Policy, open Run box, type gpedit.msc and hit Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor, and navigate to the following setting:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update

group policy wu 1

Double-click on Configure Automatic Updates to open its configuration box. Select Enabled, and then from the available Options, from the drop-down menu, select Notify for download and notify for install. Click on Apply and Exit. Restart your computer.

windows 10 gp 2

This policy specifies whether this computer will receive security updates and other important downloads through the Windows automatic updating service.

This setting lets you specify whether automatic updates are enabled on this computer. If the service is enabled, you must select one of the four options in the Group Policy Setting:

  • 2 – Notify before downloading and installing any updates. When Windows finds updates that apply to this computer, users will be notified that updates are ready to be downloaded. After going to Windows Update, users can download and install any available updates.
  • 3 – (Default setting) Download the updates automatically and notify when they are ready to be installed. Windows finds updates that apply to the computer and downloads them in the background (the user is not notified or interrupted during this process). When the downloads are complete, users will be notified that they are ready to install. After going to Windows Update, users can install them.
  • 4 – Automatically download updates and install them on the schedule specified below. Specify the schedule using the options in the Group Policy Setting. If no schedule is specified, the default schedule for all installations will be every day at 3:00 AM. If any updates require a restart to complete the installation, Windows will restart the computer automatically. (If a user is signed in to the computer when Windows is ready to restart, the user will be notified and given the option to delay the restart.) On Windows 8 and later, you can set updates to install during automatic maintenance instead of a specific schedule.
  • 5 – Allow local administrators to select the configuration mode that Automatic Updates should notify and install updates. With this option, local administrators will be allowed to use the Windows Update control panel to select a configuration option of their choice. Local administrators will not be allowed to disable the configuration for Automatic Updates.

If the status for this policy is set to Disable, any updates that are available on Windows Update must be downloaded and installed manually. To do this, search for Windows Update using Start. If the status is set to Not Configured, use of Automatic Updates is not specified at the Group Policy level. However, an administrator can still configure Automatic Updates through Control Panel.

Now if you open Settings Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced Options, you will a grayed out Notify to download button and a notification saying "Some settings are managed by your organization", please ignore it.

Henceforth, when updates are available, you will see the following pop-up notification. I tested this on the last 2-3 occasions when Updates were available for my PC, and every time Updates were available.

Let me know if you do not have the gdpedit on your PC, so that I can get you another way of accomplishing the same task.

Hi @case4-,

I am the The_Fossette. It looks like you were interacting with @Riddle_Decipher, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.

Use the active hours feature to let Windows know when you're typically at your PC. Windows will use that info to schedule updates and restarts when you’re not using the PC.

  • Select the Start  button, select Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , then select Change active hours.

  • Choose the start time and end time for active hours, and then select Save.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care.

Cheers!

Thanks for the help. I followed the instructions provided. Are the updates downloaded when the computer restarts?
