I don’t remember what my password is and I can’t log into my computer. I tried reseting my password earlier today but when I tried logging into, it still said not correct. The command prompt doesn’t help either. Can someone please help me?

@AJ438, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Sure, I can help. If you’re locked out of your HP notebook and resetting the password hasn’t worked, the right method depends on a few details:

First: What kind of account is it?

Microsoft Account (email login)

If your login screen shows an email address, you're using a Microsoft account.

Try this:

  • Go to another device and visit: https://account.live.com/password/reset
  • Reset your password there.
  • Return to your locked laptop and make sure it's connected to the internet, then try the new password.

If your PC isn’t online, the new password won’t sync, so restart and connect to Wi-Fi from the lock screen (look for the network icon).

Local Account (no email shown)

If you're using a local account (just a username), and don’t remember the password, try these options:

Option A: Use Password Reset Disk (if created earlier)

If you created a password reset disk earlier, insert it and follow the reset wizard.

Option B: Boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Since you said Command Prompt didn’t help, this may already have failed, but if you're comfortable trying again:

  1. Force shutdown your laptop 2–3 times at the Windows logo screen to trigger Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
  2. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
  3. Use this workaround only if you understand the risks — it involves replacing Utilman.exe with cmd.exe to create a new admin account. Let me know if you want that guide.

Option C: Factory Reset (Last Resort)

If nothing else works, you can reset your PC (this will remove files unless you choose to keep them):

  1. Power off, then turn on and press F11 repeatedly to enter HP Recovery Environment.
  2. Choose Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
  3. Choose Keep my files (if you don’t want to lose data), or Remove everything.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
